What do you do in the winter time w/ your z?

Hey guys, just wondering what everone does for the winter with their z?

Most people I talk to get another car, but I really can't afford something like that. I bought the z cause it was my affordable dream car (so that means no money for me).

Thanks in advance....

m4a1mustang 10-06-2010 11:02 AM

If it snows where you live it would be a good idea to invest in a set of wheels and snow tires for winter use. A lot of guys do that here if it's their only car.

red6spd 10-06-2010 11:15 AM

My Z will be spending most of her time in the Garage. She will only come out for a drive if the roads are clear of salt sand and snow, other then that I will start her at least once a week to keep the engine happy. I got a second car 01 Forester.

IDZRVIT 10-06-2010 11:18 AM

Store the Z and drive the Sportrac or the Spectra.

What kind of tires and wheels do you suggest?

kenchan 10-06-2010 12:05 PM

not just winter, i have a dd (honda Fit Sport) i use for daily tasks. it's a cool little car for wat it is. keeps me on my toes for MT driving cause it's so slow. :p

if you're driving RWD in snow, definitely get snow tires.

antman22 10-06-2010 12:29 PM

i drive mine during the winter. in dallas, we only get one or two weeks of bad/icy weather...during those periods, i drive. real slow. and avoid getting close to anyone.

i may invest in getting nerf pads for the z....

spearfish25 10-06-2010 12:32 PM

This thread will go on for way too long.

You will get two common answers. This will be interjected with occasional posts of anecdotal evidence suggesting that one or the other is inferior.

1) Drive it in the winter with snow tires
2) Get a different car for the winter and garage the Z

Any true snow tire will be fine on a cheap set of rims. If you use the 'search' function, you'll find threads by both myself and AK with our winter tire setups. I can't find mine but I've included AK's for your browsing ease.

I'll be driving mine in winter, tires, i'm going with HAnkook IPikes, wheels are '07 350Z track 18" Rays.

njustidokite 10-06-2010 12:40 PM

Ok, thanks everybody.

I cry a lot while I drive my winter beater

ClemsonWill 10-06-2010 01:13 PM

You can find a beater for the price of a set of winter wheels and tires. My brother-in-law bought a green Ford aspire for $600. He drove it for 2 years and sold it for $450. It looked awful. But it got him from point A to point B. His mustang mach 1 just sat in the garage.

Winter 'beaters' have to be insured, maintained and stored which all add to the cost (in the city, parking ain't cheap). Then you can start the discussion about what's safer....a beater on bald 15yo tires or a Z on snow tires. Or you can buy snow tires for the beater, but you probably should have bought them for the Z in that case.

kenchan 10-06-2010 01:22 PM

i like snow tires on my Honda Fit. drives like a AWD car.

not that anyone cares. :p

professordave- pls chime in on what you do for winter. :D

Liability insurance is cheap! If you live in the city, use public transportation. Why would you buy any car with bald tires? Save the Z from the harsh winter weather and roads. lol I'm just messing with you.

Honestly everyone's situation is different. My little civic isn't worth but a couple of thousand bucks. It's cheap to maintain, good on gas, and comfortable. Best of all it allows me to really enjoy the time I spend with my Z. I'm not worried about having to drive the Z in bad conditions.

TreeSemdyZee 10-06-2010 06:11 PM

I bought the same Blizzaks that AK got from TireRack and bought some wheels from them also. They were beyond awesome. I was buzzing by people in front wheel drive and AWD cars like it was nothing. Of course, I work in Kentucky and they pretty much can't even drive when it's dry, so it's all relative.

Tirerack has got the Blizzak LM25 (which is what I bought) for $140 each plus you get a $50 reward card with set of 4. They've got some other good prices right now too.

No winter here drive year round.........:driving:

red6spd 10-06-2010 09:11 PM

It only cost me $44 a month to insure my 01 Forester. It use to belong to my mother who purchased it new back in 01. Its got 180k on the clock and runs like a champ.

Soygen 10-06-2010 09:26 PM

I drive mine just like I do in Summer. Really we only have two seasons here. Summer and Not-Summer.

Boost_lee 10-07-2010 12:02 AM

ditto.

Winter = windows down finally

memorylasts 10-07-2010 12:12 AM

I drive mine!

Waiz 10-07-2010 12:52 AM

What is this winter you speak of?

wilsonp 10-07-2010 06:20 PM

I plan to put on all-season tires on the stock wheels.

(That's what I did with the NSX, then I got refurbed wheels and just swapped wheels and tires myself.)

AllForTheCash 10-07-2010 09:56 PM

I have a daily beater that I take out when the weather is not too great...Keeps the Z looking new 24/7 and out of the crappy weather...

StLRedrider 10-07-2010 09:59 PM

bust out the dog sled!!!!!

njustidokite 10-08-2010 08:29 AM

hahaha

OldGuy 10-08-2010 05:37 PM

I drive my Altima coupe November through April, until the PA salt and cinders are gone. Will keep both great cars for thbe duration...

kenchan 10-08-2010 05:55 PM

my other set of flatstoppers came in. :p

Mike 10-08-2010 06:07 PM

since track season is generally over December through March, I put the street pads back on and try to daily drive it more.

LunaZ 10-08-2010 07:44 PM

Owning a Z necessitates an alternate vehicle for Home Depot runs.
Since I can't fit very much in the way of lumber, shrubs or other home improvement items in the Z, I also have a beater truck. This also solves my winter time dilemma.

PapoZalsa 10-08-2010 07:49 PM

Same thread as last year! :shakes head:
