Passenger Airbag Sensor not turning OFF

I have a 20 month old baby that rides with me sometimes. I've had issues with the passanger airbag sensor not turning off when I use the carseat. My wife has the opposite problem when she sits on the passenger side. The airbag sensor turns off. Sometimes its hit and miss. Have you had this problem?

AK370Z 03-09-2009 08:21 PM

Hey Sergio, that seems like a big issue. I wouldn't drive with ANY airbag issues. After all it's a life and death situation. I was able to find a TSB (it's not for 370Z but for other 07-09 vehicles including the 350Z)

Take a look:

Basically they are saying if your sensor is okay, no further action necessary. But if it's faulty, they'll replace the passenger seat cushion or sensor . Also, to answer your question, NO I do not have this problem.

Hope this helps.

I will retract my comment from the above post mine being " fine". My airbags are always on! I never get the yellowish "Airbags off" sign. When I start my car it does flash the sign but once the car is on - airbag is on. :(. It doesn't bother me since I'll never put a baby in my car but for those of you that do, I'd get it checked. They will simple replace the sensor under the seat. It's an easy fix.

could be the same issue that some of the G37 have had there is a TSB for them. PM me and I can give you some details. Cannot post the link here as it to another form and AK will delete it as that is against form rules.

Is this it?

As I have said before, if it's informational and will help out our Z owners, you can post it.

shumby 03-18-2009 09:57 AM

^^^ not sure if that is itor not I cannot see it here at work. But here is the link to the single post for the TSB. Am I am just busting your balls AK about the other form rules.

After reading the owner's manual, I found out that my airbag sensors are just fine! I got a little confused with the warning signs but it's all sorted out now.

I have a 2010 and the airbag light comes on saying the airbag is off when my girlfriend is in the passenger seat sometimes. Think I should probably take the car in to get looked at.

Sounds like you just need to feed her a few cheeseburgers.

passenger airbag light

I have a 40th anniversary model and the passenger airbag light may come on to tell me the airbag is off and noone is in the seat. I had a case of water on the passenger seat and it again came on showing me that airbag was off. Will be telling this info to dealer tomorrow as I go to get oil change. First oil change since receiving car. Going to get synthetic as "road and Track" didn't really state that the ester oil was worth getting. They called the ester oil, "special sauce". Has anyone else had this problem with their z?

DIGItonium 08-26-2010 11:52 PM

Whenever I have stuff sitting on the seat or even with my gf sitting (~103-110 lbs), the light is always on. Every once in awhile it turns off, but it depends on the location of the items or how she sits.

Same problem with my wife. We've discovered that if she sits down with her feet flat on the floor and knees bent (no weight on the front edge of the seat), the airbag OFF light comes on. If she straightens her legs so the front of the seat is compressed, the light goes off and the airbag is engaged.

Just another bad location for the weight sensor.

My fiancee and I just noticed the same thing last week. That doesn't seem to be the safest setup. I now make sure that light is OFF while she's in the car. I've even shut the car on and off, and she's gotten in and out of the car to make sure that airbag is on. Kind of scary in such a little machine.

Same issue here. When my gf sits in the passenger seat, the light is sometimes on and sometimes not.

failingboy 10-25-2010 08:22 PM

When my wife sits in the passenger seat, the "Airbag Off" light is NEVER on...jk. Actually, I've never noticed one way or the other, which probably means the light is off.

tgato 04-23-2014 03:49 PM

I have a similar problem. The disabled light comes on when my wife sits in the seat. She is 5'8" and weighs 120 lbs. The car has been to the dealer twice and they want me to take it to a different dealer. It is like talking to a wall.

icedog2g 04-23-2014 05:18 PM

Sometimes the sensors trip and recongnize that a adult of lightweight could be mistaken for a child because of the airbag going off on a small child as a safety measurment. Depending on the weight of the person and position he/she is in the seat, it can turn off.

MacCool 04-23-2014 05:41 PM

Had that problem with my 2011 Z. "Airbag Off" light would come on every so often with my wife sitting there. I haven't seen that yet on my 2014 Z, but it's brand new. She watches it like a hawk now, however, so I'm sure she'll keep posted.

JARblue 04-23-2014 06:33 PM

I've noticed this previously in my 2011 Z. Haven't bothered to screw with it because it's inconsistent and infrequent. Plus, I don't have passengers very often.

My girlfriend is 4'11" and weighs about 115 and the airbag is always off, normal?

Probably normal. I forget what the minimum weight is, but she's pretty close. Raising her legs, so more weight is on the sensor, may trigger it. If heavier passengers turn the air bag on, she's just too light.

Is it better for her to just sit normal with a seatbelt then?

-Raj

SouthArk370Z 02-04-2015 08:51 PM

The Owner's Manual discusses what to do for passengers that don't trigger the sensor. I assume wearing the belt is all that she can do if she can't activate the bag.

Placing a small, firm pillow so that her weight is concentrated on the sensor may help.

yah, sitting normally and strapped in is probably best.
