Order now...or wait

Hey,
Just wanted to hear your opinion on this.
If I order the car this week, it will be here around 2-3 months.

That puts me at latest June.

Which gets me thinking...should I just wait and order a 2010 at the end of November to get it during February?
Or just go and order it now.

I got a great deal below invoice...and if the economy gets better, it would be harder to get invoice too.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

Kinda tough to say one way or the other without knowing more about your situation. Like what are you driving now? I'm guessing that you don't have any pressing need for a new car, if you're contemplating waiting until November, right? Here's an idea. Wait till details on the 2010 model come out so you know what changes they're making for next year. If there's some significant improvement that you really want on the list of changes, then put your order in. On the other hand, if you find out that they're not making any major changes, your timing will be just about right to take advantage of end-of-year clearance incentives. Either way, you win.

(Btw, this thread would have probably made more sense under the Pricing/Ordering Discussion section. Oh well, no biggie.)

Its early May and you are at the lake with all your buddies. Everyone is swimming and having a great time. You check the water and it is DAMN cold. You know it will be warmer in a month.

Do you jump in anyway cause you can not pass up on the fun?

The economy is a slow turn, and life is short. Order it and hand-off your order (there should be others wanting what you pass-up) if you go out and buy one on the showroom floor. If you decide to hold-off when the time nears for your order arrival than hand it off as well.

If you got a deal below invoice, I would order it now, as you are in a very good price position. Secondly, I highly doubt that there would be significant changes for the 2010 model; minor, if any. It seem like Nissan calibrated the new Z to a point where it will not need to be refreshed so soon or very so often (take the previous Z for example).

Anything is possible in terms of economy, but if things are going to get better, it will definitely not be overnight.

And things definitely aren't going to get better if everyone holds back and waits before buying.

Thanks for the replies.
Basically, I dont' really care about changes unless its MAJOR.
But what I am concerned about is the year.
i.e. a 2009 model or a 2010 model when the time comes for me to sell.

Wouldn't the 2010 model get more money?

Thats what I am worried about.

My situation is basically, summer is around the corner and my 08altima is getting boring.
So this is going to be a weekend/fun car.

Do I NEED a car? No.
Do I WANT a car? Yes.

Only if our deflation does not stop soon, as there is a very high potential for hyper-inflation on the rebound; if that happens buy a wheel barrel to carry your useless cash (aka USD).

If I were you I would have ordered it already! People that are waiting for prices to go under invoice are going to be waiting a while unless they are extremely lucky since no one I know wants to rush units off a lot for a loss...if you have a good deal then go for it and have a great summer. If you put it off then I would wait until next year and get it in april right when the weather starts getting good. The recession is only getting deeper so the longer you hold out as of now the better deals you are going to see. If you want to sit on the sidelines for 3-6 months you will probably save 500-1000$ on the car but there goes the summer. Hope that helps

Thanks for the replies.

What do you think the difference in price I will get when it comes time to sell.
A 2009 vs. a 2010.

That's the only major thing that is wanting me to wait.
I would just be gaining 3 months and a 2010 model if I wait. Since driving it in the winter in Chicago is out of the question.

It will greatly depend on how long you keep before selling. If you unloaded in 2yrs there will be a pretty big difference. Over time that will shrink considerably due to the +/- of mileage adjustments.

Using Edmunds for a 350Z base model, clean condition, black, no options, 85255 zip, trade-in value:

Sell in 2 Years
24K Miles (12K/yr - 2yrs)

2007 - $14,959
2006 - $14,212

$747 difference. Will be higher with more equipped car.

Sell in 5 Years
60K Miles (12K/yr - 5yrs)

2004 - $9,993 (-789 mileage adj.)
2003 - $10,099

-$106 difference .

This analysis does not take into account price increases which will make the difference more in favor for the earlier model. For 09 to 10 the economy will drive for little increase but the Yen will drive for a large increase. Pull out your crystal ball.

Do what your heart tells you, I doubt if you will regreat the decision.

Get it now!

brisk 03-03-2009 06:50 PM

I decided to order it now.
I got ~1K below invoice.
Coudln't pass up the offer.

THis should make up for the difference when it comes to sell the car.
Between the 2010 and the 2009

epod86 03-03-2009 06:58 PM

-1K on invoice? Well done!

theDreamer 03-03-2009 06:59 PM

1,000 below invoice...WOW! I would jump on that deal right now if I got that.
