Skip a gear?

A question to those of you with a manual transmission.

Do you ever skip a gear?
Say you are easily shifting through the gears and get to about 50 mph in 4th, do you just skip 5th and go right to 6th?

Not really...

ProfessorDave 08-05-2010 06:51 PM

That would make the other gears jealous...

seriously, I only skip a gear during aggressive downshifts.

radio5boro 08-05-2010 06:52 PM

welll lets say i rev really high in 4th gear... and i just feel like cruising after. ill just match it to the 6th gear. i've never had any issues doing this.

I do it all the time. If I'm accelerating quickly up to ~45 mph I'll usually short shift 1st to 2nd... somtimes third... then I'll go straight into 5th.

If you are already at your desired cruising speed in, say, 3rd, gear, there's no reason to go 3-4-5 or 3-4-5-6... Just jump to the gear you want to be in.

Same thing for downshifting...

Sometimes, yes. I go 3rd to 5th, too. Also 1st to 3rd if just slowly accelerating from rest. Yet, for the most part, I do not skip gears when accelerating.

shadoquad 08-05-2010 07:04 PM

I do it all the time. If I feel like accelerating quickly on a 40mph street, I'll go 2nd to 4th when I hit 40 and cruise.

Push370zzz 08-05-2010 07:06 PM

i just start in 6th, go through clutches pretty quick though

but really i will usually go from 3rd or 4th to 6th when entering highway. Never any issue, nor can I think of a reason for there to be one.

Well when I do this my transmission grinds really bad. One dealer says "Well yeah, because you're not supposed to do that". They are refusing to go any further with it.
I have called another dealer and explained what is happening and they agree with me that while it may not be the norm to skip it should not grind.

I have been driving manual transmission cars for 20 years and have never had a problem doing this.

I am out of town so a friend is going to pick up my car and bring it to the other dealer.

The service manager tried to tell me that the 370z transmission is a whole different animal because of the syncro-rev match. :icon14:

I hate it when brainless sales reps talk utter BS like this, just to either a) get you off the phone, b) relentlessly promote their product (even if it's for having/doing something that it actually doesn't) or c) grasp at any small thing to make it SEEM like they know what they're talking about when, in actuality, they haven't a clue.

I haven't got my 370 yet, but I really don't see why it should be a problem. I've skipped gears in all my cars so far, for similar reasons as mentioned above, and never had a problem.

On the other hand, I've had problems with a few of my cars with second gear just refusing to engage on a downshift. Even on relaxed downshifts - very slow speed, too fast for first but too slow for third (such as on approach to a traffic light that just changed from red to green), i try to shift down and it just won't go in. I have to lift and re-engage the clutch. Has anyone else ever had this? What's that about?

TongMan 08-05-2010 07:30 PM

I do.

That's BS. If you are having an issue with the car grinding into 6th gear it's a bad synchro. There are a number of members here who have had their transmissions replaced under warranty because of this.
