New transmission has been ordered and will be installed, hopefully, by Friday. :D

It really sucks that I had to go through all of this trouble just to get a warranty issue fixed. Out of four Nissan dealers that I have dealt with I have only gotten good customer service from the last one. The service manager has kept me in the loop the entire time and they have treated me with respect. Unlike the last three. 25% Satisfaction with Nissan dealers so far.

I also have to say that I am so thankful for good friends. I have been out of town during this whole ordeal and a few friends have been awesome. They have been shuttling my car from dealer to dealer for me. I think I owe them a dinner.

Glad you found a dealer willing to look at what it is for the merits, and also glad you don't have to deal with your initial thought of "I thought it was normal".

I have an '04 G35 Coupe 6MT and have gone through three transmissions due to synchro issues, 5-6 was definitely one, another can be second, but it's very common, and documented all over the different boards.

There is a synchro problem, and it either hits you or it doesnt, and I'm happy to say the 4th transmission in my G has been trouble free for over 40k miles, where the others were less than 20k..

Nissan's fix is to throw a new transmission at it instead of fixing the actual issue, I'll refer to their judgement on cost and effectiveness of that program, but I can guarantee you there are a LOT of transmissions sitting around with bad synchros.

Did wait the first one out, and I can guarantee you it would definitely not get better.. on my first go around after being turned away from a dealer I finally got the point where even a 4 second shift to 5th with the clutch depressed woudn't get it into gear without grinding.. and at that point the service manager who I had to take with me recognized the problem.

Unfortunate, but simulating the problem with a service advisor in the car is usually the fix.. and yes they won't be happy at you attempting to show them shifts at 130mph.. typically does it on the downshift at high revs too.. regardless of ultimate speed.. FYI

Itsalex687 04-12-2012 09:17 PM

shifting really? I just stay in first everywhere I go. You should see the looks of jealousy I get when people look at me cruising at 7k rpm going 20 mph. But when I do shift I skip gears.

11Thumper 04-13-2012 04:31 AM

If you skip gears you're putting stress on the syncros of the gear you're going into. Generally not a great idea, especially if skipping more than one gear. I may be overly sensitive coming from the S2000 world. It's a big no-no there...

alb84z31t 04-13-2012 05:37 AM

I'll jump from 3rd to 5th or 4th to 6th, I do it frequently to get up to speed when turning onto a highway then stay at the speed limit. There is no problem skipping gears down shifting or up shifting. I've done it my whole life with all different types of cars. The service manager that told you not to do it just gave an opinion from ignorance. As a side note... I had my wife call the service dept. of my local dealer for a valve stem cap and the person she spoke to (ironically also a service manager) told her it was an after market part. I went down there after work, and they pulled one out of a drawer at the parts dept. and gave ot to me. Not all service managers are experts on all the cars.

Since this thread got bumped I guess I'll update.

The car now has 18,000 miles 12,000 since the transmission was swapped and I've had ZERO grinding issues since. And just in case you missed it I've been boosted for the last 6,000 miles too. So much for it being my fault that the first trans went bad.

I've found that service managers and techs will usually follow the rule "If you can't blind them with brilliance then baffle them with bull****".

x2, harmless, usually had fun on the on ramp and need to slow down to merge into traffic about when I'm leaving 4th and drop right into 6th

ohioZboy 04-13-2012 01:51 PM

well there are 2 reasons why i skip gears...

1) when i'm dropping the clutch and burning out i go from 1st to 3rd because i've seen way too many people lose 2nd gear doing a burnout and shifting into 2nd when the revs are too high.

2) when my girlfriend is in my car, occasionally for some odd reason i have to go from 1st to 4th...you could imagine why :icon17:

A question to those of you with a manual transmission.

Do you ever skip a gear?

no.

/thread. :icon17:

Dwight Frye 04-13-2012 04:57 PM

Sure, I do it almost every morning. I'm in 4th doing about 70 when merging into heavy traffic on the freeway and have to get over about 6 lanes before the freeway splits. As soon as I pick a spot and get in the lane I slip directly into 6th gear and back off the gas. No problems.

thtdoodstid 04-13-2012 05:13 PM

I skip gears everyday. I've heard its bad to make it a habbit to skip the same gear repeatedly, just mix it up. Go to a different dealership and don't mention anything, but that its grinding. Get that ish fixed yo!

Mino 06-14-2012 04:11 PM

I do it all the time, I do a lot of 1-3-5 or 6th there's no reason for you to go threw all gears if you rev it high enough in first or third might as well just skip it. Specially with the traffic here in SoCal it helps a lot

kenchan 06-14-2012 04:19 PM

why bring this up now 2 months later?

Does it matter how old the thread is? It's still relevant.

SailFree 06-14-2012 04:47 PM

1) Nothing wrong with what you are doing under those circumstances.

2) Missing gears and dropping directly to the one needed while DOWNSHIFTING is the way to go.

I would say only downshift when needed, other than that all gears are used :)

mults 06-15-2012 06:57 AM

I do it all the time as well. Just cruising around town, I go from 3rd to 6th as long as I am going at leat 35mph :driving:. I had a 1994 Pontiac Formula and there was a feature called "skip-shift" that forced you to go from 1st to 4th. They did this to help meet the corporate fuel economy standards. The only way to bypass the skip-shift was to get into the gas more aggressively :eekdance:. I did end up bying an eliminator to get rid of this feature because it was a PITA!

ayrton88 06-15-2012 07:27 AM

I never skip gears on the upshift, but often when downshifting. I also still like to heel and toe myself and not use the auto rev match feature.

edub370 06-15-2012 08:13 AM

i go thru all of them so no gears feel left out :D

i even tried shifting into Reverse on the expressway when driving my old honda fit thinking it had a 6th gear. :icon17:

or as i call it, every single time i drive my volvo after getting outta my z :eekdance:

hopping back from 5 to 6 speeds can get tricky. sometimes i forget the Z has 6

Mt Tam I am 06-15-2012 10:39 AM

I missed a shift at the track, where I went from second to fifth. Oops. Then to third. I do not make a habit of this.

Vichtz 06-15-2012 11:21 AM

I always skip gears, but only because I live my life a quarter mile at a time. I don't granny shift, I double clutch like I should. Don't wanna fry my piston rings you know...
