"Zed".....?
Gang,
Got a question. I've had Datsun and Nissan "Z's" for several years and have never seen an "ed" after the "Z" emblem on our cars......... Have any of you, I didn't think so...! So why is it that whenever I watch the English TV show "Top Gear" or speak to a Canadian, they refer to the "Z" as a "Zed"...? It's always been just "Z" to me. Anyone have an answer? I sure don't know...........! "Zed" :werd: . |
The letter Z originates from the Greek alphabet. The Greeks pronounce the letter as zeta. The English pronounce it Zed. The Japanese pronounce it Fairlady Ze-to.
|
Right, the pronunciation is for the actual letter "z", not just the car.

British people pronounce Z as Zed, its kinda cool actually. They also pronounce H's as well. |
We actually pernounce is like "Zee" which is not all that different from "Zed". The letter Z really sounds more like "Zzz".
|
:iagree: With the first statements
No different than if they were repeating the alphabet. They would say Zed. |

it probably depends on the age of the Canadian and how much he/she has been influenced by American media...I prefer to say zed but honestly, zee sneaks into my vocabulary just as often. And if I'm speaking to an American, it's just easier to say 'zee' - when in Rome...;)
this is as good of an explanation of zee v. zed as any... "Zed is the name of the letter in Great Britain, India, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and most other places on earth where English is used. But in America they call it zee. " zed and zee in Canadian speech & spelling from Bill Casselman's Canadian Word of theDay BTW is that al-oom-in-um or al-u-min-e-um? |
I'm British, but as I live in Vegas now I've got used to calling it the 370 'zee'. So much so, it even feels weird to me now when I watch UK shows call it the 370 'zed'.

We call it zed in the dutch language too.
|
"Zed" reminds me of the bad guy from Power Rangers...
|
it's simple. normal people call it zed. americans call it zee. case closed. lol.
seriously, both are correct historically, though zed is more standard, more true to the origin of the letter, and in a way, more correct. but leave it to americans to insist on using a more obscure pronunciation to feel more "unique" |
<-- no comment :D

Man Americans are pro's when it comes to screwing up the language lol
It's a G37 Coupé (coop-ay) not COOP! :D |
Calling the 370 "Z"; "Zed" seems very strange / unnatural to me. Why make it more complicated by putting the “ed” like Eddy at the end with it? The letter “Z” in the alphabet seems most logical. “Z” is “Z”. If I went around calling a 370 "Z" a 370 "Zed" people would look at me like on crack cocaine. If you want to make things more complicated it's your choice I suppose.

You could be correct. But I guarantee, you folks up North wouldn't be here either if your Southern Cousins weren't around. :tiphat: . |
We Brits invented the language and we pronounce it "Zed" therefore we are right and thus Americans can only be wrong. Americans don't have the brain power so they simplify our language in order to make it easier for them to communicate amongst themselves.
(last sentence wasn't meant to be taken at 1°) |
O boy here it comes.......
