Painting Calipers
Last week I was bored so I decided to paint my engine cover. I really like the way the red contrasts with the blue.
Today I saw some pics of a 40th Z and I like the way that the red calipers look on that car. That got me thinking about painting mine. I am trying to keep my appearance mods subtle. The LAST thing I want is for the car to look "riced". Has anyone tried the brake caliper paint kits? If so, which ones are the best? I am also thinking about waiting until I put the car away for the winter and removing them to send out for powder coating. Will it look bad to do either of these options? PS. I wasn't sure if this thread should be in the brake, exterior or the DIY section. :ugh2: |
for brake calipers, powdercoat, don't paint. The finish is 10x more durable. If you paint, you will likely be re-painting about once a year to keep the finish bearable.
contact Mike on the forums for powdercoating he did mine: http://www.the370z.com/members/carav...0-07-27-06.jpg http://www.the370z.com/members/carav...18177-0003.jpg |
That looks great.
Any issues with removing all four calipers at the same time and leaving the lines open for a few days or weeks? What was the turn time for yours? |
he has a core set, can send you a complete set with a deposit, and you send your originals back to him, no down time other than dis assembly and assembly.

Sweet. Maybe this won't be a winter project.
Thanks, I'll look into it. |

and be careful who you get to powdercoat your brakes, it's not an easy task compared to say wheels. You need to disassemble the caliper completely, by removing all pistons, then know how to seal it back up after powdercoating is complete. If you want to do it right...

And I guess that red and blue aren't really contrasting colors either. |
I have a blue Z and I painted my brake calipers red myself. I did it about 4 months ago and they still look like they were just painted, no chips/fading or anything. All I had to do was take the wheels off and take walmart plastic bags and tape them around where I did not want the paint to go, and spray away. But first, I took brake caliper cleaner and sprayed it down good and took a wire brush and scrubbed them til they were completely clean (this is very important). I bought VHT spray paint that resists high temperatures and sprayed 4 coats on each caliper. Everything together costs about 15-20 bucks total, a lot cheaper and less hassle than powdercoating. But, I'm sure powdercoating is a more professional way of doing it, but I'm completely happy with the spray paint way.

depends on if you have sport package brakes or not. the paint wont stay on the sport package brakes well because they are already painted. If you have base brakes, go and paint until your hearts content.
