Remote Start on Z

Anybody here install remote start on their manual Z? What type was it? Does it really work efficiently and is it worth it?

Can you even install one on the manual?

All the remote starts I ever see are for AT's only. If anyone this is not the case please post brand and style.

There have been models in the past that will work on a MT. I have been out of the car electronics game for many years now so I don't know if there is a manufacturer that still makes one but back before Clifford was bought by Directed they made one.
There were a few extra steps involved. The way it worked was that you set the parking brake and let the car idle in neutral while activating the system. You then got out of the car and shut it down using the remote start system. If you opened a door the car would not remote start.
I had one for many years and it worked well.

Most places that install don't offer it on a manual because it's a liability. You can never leave the car in gear though unless you want to ram whatever is in front of you when you push the button. On an AT the auto start will only work when in park and e-brake engaged. With a little modding you can wire it so that it bypasses that option.

I had it in my Integra about 5yrs ago. My dad went to go move my car once since it was blocking someone and decided to show off my new install. Naturally he left it in gear after moving it. Goes to show his friend how it worked and nearly ran himself over. Thankfully there was nothing in front of my car to hit cause I would have been pretty upset.

I believe that Viper alarm system still have the remote start for manual cars.

It's still possible on manual cars by disengaging the clutch safety switch, but I don't know how you would be able to bypass the smart key function on our cars to enable it to work.

It is an option (along with 2-way paging) on the JDM cars.

It was an after market option for me. I am having it installed next week on my 40th MT. If I find out what brand and all, I will post.

Even if you can get it I wouldn't want it. I just KNOW there would be that one time I would happen to leave the car in gear and that would be the morning I wanted to use the remote start... HAHA.

Cjanik 08-09-2010 07:59 AM

been there done that.

had a 5 speed 01 prelude. naturally I knew now to leave it in gear so I would always have it in N before I hit start. but if someone else drove it (valet), or a friend moved it for me, I would forget and the car would jump about 2 feet at a time until the remote start gave up.

It can be run through the gear as well as the emergency brake. So, even if it's in gear, if the emergency brake is engaged, it won't let the car start.

It is a liability for bigger installer companies, I was going to have a local friend installer do mine, but have also wondered about dealing with our smart start system interfering?

cmancha003 08-09-2010 10:08 AM

I had it on my 300zx. I think it was Viper. Mine had a neutral safety switch that wouldnt allow it to start unless the car was in neutral. I believe the newer cars, one must push the clutch to start the car, even if in neutral. I think its illegal now since there were many places half-assing the install and not putting this in.

See, that makes more sense to me.

But I leave my car in gear when parked anyway, because I used to live on an inclined street and drive cars with crappy emergency brakes. It has become force of habit, but it's still not a bad habit to keep.
