Dealer Said 370Z Now Built On Cayman Platform!?!?!?!

I know. It sounds too ridiculous to be real, but that's what happened.

A couple weeks ago, I went to Performance Nissan in Duarte, CA to test drive a 370Z with 6MT. (LOOOOOOVED the car, but more on that later.)

Anyway, during the course of the test drive, I told the sales guy that I was still considering a used Cayman S and hadn't made a firm decision on which car to buy yet.

So, when we get back to the dealership, we sit down so I can get a quote. The car had a $10,000 "Market Value Adjustment" sticker on the window, which I laughed at hysterically. I told the sales guy there was no way that would E-V-E-R happen, so don't even bother to ask. :rofl2:

They came back offering MSRP and, since I wasn't ready to roll I didn't attempt to negotiate anything lower. I thanked him for the test drive and started to get up to leave. At this point, I got "T.O.'d" to the sales manager who commented on how great the Cayman S is.

Then he said, "It's great how they're now building the 370Z on the Cayman chassis."

Stunned silence. :wtf2:

I asked him if he was sure about that.

To which he replied, "Yes, Nissan worked it out with Porsche so they could build the new 370Z on the Cayman platform."

I didn't have the heart to tell the guy he had no fookin' clue what he was talking about, so I just laughed, thanked him for his time, shook hands and left. I was shaking my head the entire time.

How is it that these clueless guys are even capable of putting a biscuit on the table. They are so utterly inept. I can only hope their mechanics know a little bit more than the dealership's management when the car comes in for repair. I mean, it's not as if the two cars are even built using the same CONFIGURATION! One is a front engine, rear drive, and the other is mid-engine rear drive. Not the least bit similar!

Is it any wonder the car business is in dire straits when these lying sacks of horse dung make ridiculous claims like this one?

Thought you guys might get a chuckle out of this.

Man...salesmen will say anything to sell cars these days...

SoCal 370Z 02-24-2009 06:58 PM

Well, somebody had better tell Porsche that they are building the Cayman on the 370Z chassis!

This is one of those situations where I ask if the guy is a liar, or truly so ignorant about his job he doesnt know any better. There were days when you could go to a car dealership, and while they were obviously there to make money, they at least were knowledgeable of the product because they were true salesman. Now they just hire teens, pay them crap wages and it's a revolving door job. Anyone worth anything moves on to management.

I think everyone on this board already knows this, but never go to buy a car without knowing the details of the car inside and out.

The sad thing is, this guy wasn't just a sales troll. He was the sales manager! I'd expect a sales manager to at least be smart enough not to say something as stupid as this.

Scary.

Even sadder is that you will never receive that rubbish at a Porsche dealership! Nissan could spinoff the 370Z and the GT-R into their own showroom with competent enthusiasts selling them versus having them tucked next to a Versa.

Fn unbelievable.
I've heard some weird car sales schit before, but that one is right up there.

I've long felt that if the GT-R were to be a sales success, it would be in spite of Nissan's dealer base. Why Nissan decided not to badge the GT-R an Infiniti, I'll never understand.

Same goes for the Z. You're dealing with an enthusiast buyer, who probably knows the tiniest of details on the car's specs, performance and heritage. So, let's just feed him as much crap as we think he wants to hear - anything to get him to sign.

Truly remarkable.

I wonder what the dealerships will tell me tomorrow :wtf2:

BanningZ 02-24-2009 07:50 PM

^ they'll tell you that the Z is actually a rebadged 335i. :rofl2:

alan93rsa 02-24-2009 08:15 PM

On the used Cayman S vs the 370Z. I looked a the same idea. A really nice 06 Cayman S with under 9000 mi for $41000. After I drove the Z there was no way I would spend the extra 5 - $6000 over the deal I got on my touring/sport.

Keep in mind that the Cayman is getting a completely new engine for 09. That is part of the reason you see new 08's with $10k discounts on them. In that scenario you would be looking a $68k reduced to $58k in comparison to the Z. It then makes even less sense.

enenen 02-24-2009 08:46 PM

I went to a couple dealerships to check out the 370s. The first one had an 08 Nismo 350Z for like $26995 right in the window. The second one had the same exact car and they said they were selling it for $32,000. I told the sales manager "the other dealership has this same exact car for $27,000 right in the window."

the sales manager tells me, "that couldn't have been a NISMO. they probably just put NISMO badging on it."

nevermind the bumpers and sideskirts, number plate, red seats, etc. Nothing like talking down to your customers and questioning their intelligence. Looks like I won't be buying a car there. I'll be sure to stop by and show them they car they could have sold me, however, and be happy to explain why I went elsewhere.

ZzzZz 02-24-2009 11:47 PM

In his defense, the salesman probably had a limited vocabulary and didn't know what platform means... he probably thought it meant "the platform in which Nissan based the 370z to compete against."

Oh well, I tried... anyways Performance Nissan sales philosophy sucks, they should learn to recognize the market. This isn't 2006.

By branding the GT-R a Nissan, it's not so much as to bringing the GT-R up but to bring the other Nissan's up.

Guys,

It wasn't the salesman who made this ludicrous statement - it was the sales manager, someone who should have known better.

Hey AK,

Long time, no talk. No, this isn't the salesman. Nor is it the guy who made this insane comment. That was the sale manager, a middle aged guy who looked as if he should have enough life experience not to make comments he has no way of substantiating.

I just want to give the sales manager one of these:

is it me or do we have lots of threads where dealers are BS'ing left and right to ppl.

!xoible 02-25-2009 02:47 PM

what's the motivation for dealers to learn the product they're selling? i have bought quite a few cars in the past like 5 years and i have gone on many many test drives for fun and met tens of sales person, i only met ONE single sales person who knew about cars! that person works for Irvine Subaru. he knew ins and outs of the car he was selling, he knew a lot about 350z (he owns a modded one), about the Evo (in details), my own car, and a whole bunch of other cars that i told him i was interested in!

Um...not sounding like idiots? Having credibility? After all, if someone doesn't believe anything you tell them (due to lack of credibility), how likely are they to buy from you?

nogoodname 02-25-2009 03:21 PM

^^ I should do an experiment

I'll walk in the dealership and act like a noob....let them throw the verbal diahheria at me...hahah

then i would tear them apart with what the real info is

Obviously there's people who buy from them. credibility is not a motivation to them, money is! and as long as some people buy from them there's no reason to put any effort!

i've seen a lady walk into crevier bmw in orange county and asked for the 3er coupe. the guy asked the 328 or 335? she was like whichever is higher. i was like LOL

Well that's true. I was thinking of people like us, people who actually research their cars before buying them. But I guess we're in the minority. Personally I can't imagine making such a large purchase without researching first, and relying entirely on what a salesman tells me. But you're right -- clearly there are people who do exactly that.

epod86 02-25-2009 07:21 PM

I've walked out on a lie twice (I wasn't going to buy anything so i couldn't feel that high and mighty) and my father has only done it once, how only once I don't know. Man, that was something to behold. We were shopping for a AWD to take up to the snow, and after hunting around the lot, we found what we wanted but without the AWD, and we explained as much to the sales man who walked up.
"Oh no, this one definitely has AWD, I was just looking at the paperwork." To which my father responds:
"Are you sure? There are no badges or anything that say so."
"I swear on my job it does." He says.
So my dad gets down on the ground, and looks under rear wheels, which the sales guy mimics. Without saying anything, my dad gets up, looks the guy in the eye, and says "you lying b*****d." so dead pan I almost burst out laughing. We start driving away and he calls up the sales manager and tells him he should fire so and so, with appropriate explination. I didn't even remember the guy giving his name or wearing a name tag. I was impressed.

My instances were a lot less impressive, they were something like A) "I know your wrong about that, because apparently I've been looking at this car longer than you have," and B) "I know you're lying about that, and I don't do business with liars."

If you don't like the guy, for any reason, the pitch of his tie, walk away or ask for a different sales guy. Always.

Oh man that is the same with my dad. He always asks to talk with the manager if it is. Then I remember when my dad asked for the owner of the Dealer so the owner flew in a helicopter to get there. Yes we got the car, After everything was done my dad spit on the managers shoes or pants.
