Got a booboo.

Does this call for a complete bumper repaint?
All the damage seems to be cosmetic.. Only to the paint, nothing else I can see.

A short pole got ahold of my rear bumper.

(Excuse the messy garage)

clean the area really good and try to buff it out, someone backed into me awhile back, left some paint on my bumper, It all buffed out and you cant even see the fine scratches when I wax over it.

res0zsfa 07-20-2010 05:55 PM

oh man..... did you try using scratch-x? i think its a polish or something? u can get them at autozone...but iono... that SUCKS big time.

trent1331 07-20-2010 06:00 PM

I haven't touched it yet. Im worried about the part with the paint that is peeled upwards, you can see in the second picture.

Cmike2780 07-20-2010 06:05 PM

Definately repaint. Damage is beyond the top coat judging by the 2nd picture. You probably don't need to paint the whole bumper, just that side. Sand, mud & repaint.

lllll210lllll 07-20-2010 06:08 PM

 ouch

kenchan 07-20-2010 06:09 PM

yah, i would have your insurance take a look if you have a low deductible.

sorry to see this. :(

CrownR426 07-20-2010 06:21 PM

You dont need a new bumper but I suggest you find someone with an aftermarket one so you can buy it off them. A shop will charge for labor and the actual work. In the end buying one will save time and money. btw make sure it comes painted lol..

yellowgold 07-20-2010 06:29 PM

poor car :(

Trips 07-20-2010 06:41 PM

Suks to see this. I agree on some of the suggestions that it needs to be repainted, and if you can find one in the same color will save time and money.

If you are going to repaint part of your bumper - you better repaint the whole thing... seriously - you will have two very distinct colors if you dont do the whole thing...

To the OP, sorry about the bumper, but like everybody said, that's gonna need a respray.

TreeSemdyZee 07-20-2010 07:05 PM

Looks like a total to me.
Dibs on any parts that are salvageable.

j/k.
Doesn't look too bad. Although I say that with pain inside. Hate to see these beautiful cars dinged. But stuff happens.

Why am I not surprised?

I suggest light rubbing compound and touch up paint. What I mean by touch up paint is, the guys the car dealers call when they accidentally hit something with a customers car. Some of these guys are really good and can blend paint well.

OR

Just repaint the bumper.

oh the pain... ouch...

Cmike2780 07-20-2010 07:52 PM

If it's under insurance, it would be better to repaint the whole bumper. I just thought it would be less work. You just blend the color in with the surrounding area. You won't be able to tell the two apart unless your color match is way off. But, I agree, for the best result, the whole bumper.

That damage is going to be like $2,000 to get it fix. Specially that the car is black and they need to match/blend the paint.

Sorry about that, I would be piss!!

2k? No way. It should cost about 800 for a nice paint job. Maybe a little more ( or less ) if you need a cover. Our covers are actualy pretty inexpensive though.

webnola 07-20-2010 11:40 PM

you can fix this yourself for under $50. buy some sand paper, primer, spray touch up paint, and clearcoat and you are good. just did this on my accord and it came out surprisingly perfect :)

i got my paint and clearcoat from Nissan 370Z Touch Up Paint, then went to pep boys for the sand paper and primer. found a nice day and spend a couple hours to fix it, most of the time was actually spent waiting for stuff to dry.

CrownR426 07-20-2010 11:46 PM

I'd rather pay with my own money rather going through the insurance company.
They'd have to send someone over to inspect the damage and then estimate the time it'll take them to fix it. And remember your insurance premium will go up!
So in the end it's not worth it, even with your deductible.

Good look with Maaco...

billydsz 07-21-2010 07:46 AM

Shouldn't cost more than $400-$500 to repaint it. Forget insurance not worth the claim.

texasviking 07-21-2010 10:29 AM

I did the exact same thing with my old civic. (My civic was black too.) My buddy at the paint and body shop said he could sand and repaint the damaged area, but it would be obvious. Total bill with "friends and fam" discount came out to about $650 to sand and repaint the entire bumper.

I ended up having my other buddy (detailer) wet sand the fine scratches and buff the hell out of it. Then, he went over all of the paint chips with a paint pen, let it dry overnight, and hit it with the wet sand again. (very fine sandpaper both times) Finally a nice buff and wax, and the only place you could see any damage was where the plastic bumper was damaged (much like yours)

Of course, doing this takes a lot off the clear layer, so it probably wasn't the best option, but I was just getting the car ready to sell so I could buy the Z :D

elmz 07-21-2010 12:49 PM

That's not gonna buff out, it will need to be repainted. But look on the bright side, maybe you can black out the rear valance =).
