Curious about locking your keys in the Z?
If this has been posted before, then I apologize. I searched and couldn't find it.
Anyhow, people have asked me what would happen if I locked the keys in the car, and I just assumed that it would be easy enough to simply unlock the car, and since the keys are within the parameter of the car, I posited, it would unlock. Well, I was a dummy and locked them in the car this morning and was pleasantly surprised. The Z emits an audible beepy alarm. I don't know what the duration of the alarm is, but I figured I'd better unlock the car while it was still beeping. I pushed the button on the door to unlock it, recovered my keys, and thought about how it's nice to not (go into work without my room key and spending the next hour looking for someone to help me either break into my car or drive me my spare). Thank you, Nissan, for making the Z shado-proof. I figured I'd post this in case some of you had wondered, as I had, what would happen in this situation. |
I second the thanks to Nissan. I left my keys in my gym bag. Threw it in the back and then tried to lock the car. Beeped at me and I instantly knew what I had done. Hit the release and recovered my keys.
Put a smile on my face knowing I wont have the inevitable call to the tow truck one day a year. Right on Z. |
I wonder if this is true of the European spec Z or just the U.S. one?

Only one way to find out. Keep a spare key nearby if you attempt the experiment.

Well if you think about it, it would have to un-lock. The fob is within range to lock or unlock so I would think that it wouldn't care if it was inside the car or out. But if you ignored the beeping and walked away, anyone could open your door and drive away. But thanks for proving this theory.

My key fell out of my pocket and I didn't realize it when I first got my Z...got out and went to lock the door and it gave that beep. Had no idea what it was at first haha.

My wife's fob had gotten lost, so we were down to one fob. Car was operating as expected; no issues; locks and unlocks fine. Fast forward to the next time we had the car washed. They (the car wash) found her fob in the car and put it in the cargo area.
So, while her fob was lost inside the car, we were able to lock the car normally with my fob. It would seem that the rule might be that there be a fob outside the car in close proximity for it to lock, regardless if there is a fob on the inside. I haven't tried it out, just something that made me go "Hmmmmm" when we discovered the fob had been inside the car the whole time. |

You're right he's also living in Belgium, I saw his car at the garage I bought mine from. The chief mechanic was proud to show Vegitto's newly installed Stillen air intakes :driving:. Maybe he could try it out for us Europeans. Anyway, I looooved the Z during my test drive, it's one of the most fun cars I've driven, hence me ordering one :tiphat:. |

Seems like you'd want the Z to lock even if the key/fob were left inside. Interesting thread none the less, and I've yet to even experiment with the idea and/or the beeping. But say you're a pretty little blonde sitting in the car at a stop light in the bad part of town with the fob in your purse. Do you really want a boogyman to be able to run up and push a button and get in your car with you?

Worth a try, methinks. |

It would be great if the logic was published. I can almost guarentee you that if there is a way to lock the fob/s in the car, I will find it! ...and probably and the worst possible time. :)
|
I think if the car is running and in gear, that you can't just come up to it from the outside and hit the button to unlock it. But i've not tried it so can't be for sure on this.
|
the range on the fob is VERY short for the button locks from the outside, maybe 1'

yea i think its part of a safety thing not to allow u to unlock the door with the fob inside. like yea if someone was trying to "hurt you physically" and you chose to lock urself in ur car to protect urself. it'd be pretty stupid for it to let the person in

Tested it. With two fobs, car not running, I put fob "a" in the cup holder, fob "b" in my pocket, closed the door, and locked it with the button under the outside door handle. Two beeps; car locks. I unlock it, lock it again, two beeps. Walk away. Leave fob "b" in house, go to car (fob "a" still in cup holder), try to unlock, will not unlock. Get fob "b" from house, car unlocks. Leaving fob "a" in car did not make it behave any different than if it wasn't in there. Of course if I try to lock the car without having a fob on me, and have a fob in the cup holder, it beeps like crazy when I try to lock it.

The only stupid thing I find about the Key is that if the car is on, you can drive away without the key, even that later you can't turn it on again, but why not go to the extra mile and have a cutoff, after certain distance like most of the keyless cars. Also I want my car to lock automatically when I walk away and it doesnt do it. Lame.
Other than that I do like the push button :) |
