I figured that if it was worth creating a new thread, it either had to be a very low or a very high amount of dosh; otherwise, I think the OP would have just posted the amount for repairs in the original thread :).

Anyway, if I were right the $5 goes to AK for the forum ;).

But next time I'll read the full post more carefully :tiphat::

craniac24 07-03-2010 09:15 AM

Amazing how far 5 bucks will get me! :icon17:

Ok...so when I took the car to the body shop, the owner took a look at it and said, "Oh...this is NOT going to be a $500 job. You're going to want to file a claim." He pointed out the fact that there was a secondary ripple about 5 inches to the right on the main dent. He also mentioned that because this particular paint is almost impossible to get an exact match with, that they'd have to blend the paint into the adjacent panels. After all was said and done, he "guestimated" that it would be a $1500 job!!! Needless to say, I was a little surprised, and I was very curious to see what the insurance adjuster would have to say about that. To be honest, I was doubtful that the insurance company would agree to pay that much.

So...imagine my surprise when I check my voicemail and I listen to a message from the insurance adjuster. "Hi...this is so-and-so from Progressive. I went down to the shop to inspect the damage, and the final estimate for the repair came to...

$2165

So...it looks like one of our earliest guesses was the best guess! Congrats Sibze. Let me know where I can send the five spot and I'll ship it right over. I really can't believe it myself....I'm still shocked. If i was paying this out of pocket I would be 100% convinced that I was getting severely ripped off. But as long as my insurance company is willing to pay it, then no skin off my back I suppose!

nogoodname 07-03-2010 09:20 AM

yeeaa... SeaBreeze got it...lol

TreeSemdyZee 07-03-2010 09:21 AM

Poopy. I knew I was low.

KillerBee370 07-03-2010 10:30 AM

Holy shiiit!!! Did it bust the diamonds just underneath that panel too!?!

nogoodname 07-03-2010 10:32 AM

Did they replace the entire rear quarter panel...lol

ZedZed 07-03-2010 10:49 AM

I wasn't so far off to say that it had to be quite high

Jeffblue 07-03-2010 11:17 AM

Vandalism: Benefits no one, and ***** you over.

PapoZalsa 07-03-2010 11:41 AM

I was only $835 off the mark.

Zaggeron 07-03-2010 12:00 PM

Damn ... someone said earlier that the panel itself sans paint was $700 I wonder if it would have been cheaper to just replace the panel and match the paint

definately not, its bat sh it expensive to replace a rear quarterpanel as it is a part of the frame of the car. it would need to be cut and welded

This contest was fun and exciting...although it was only for $5. We should have more contests like this.

I noticed my first paint chip today.

I took the car for a wash because it was bloody filthy. Got it back and was admiring it only to find a big old chip in the front bumper.

Oh well. I'm not bothered. Although I'm posting this 'news' here, it isn't a wah, but a 'it's only a car and it was bound to happen sooner or later' kind of thing.

Besides, I'm always relieved when the first knock/ding/chip happens because the second one isn't so bad. And then the third barely matters at all.

So this means that repainting my hood and front fascia will be a chore and likely won't match the rest of the car? PG can't be that tough to color match...

craniac24 07-06-2010 02:41 PM

As I said, I was shocked also. Keep in mind, an insurance adjusters job is to negotiate the cheapest price possible for the repair. He obviously agreed that the job requires all that work, or else he wouldn't have authorized it.

Either that or he and the bodyshop owner are blowing each other...

craniac24 07-07-2010 08:05 PM

Car is back. Looks absolutely perfect. If anyone on Long Island ever needs bodywork or glass replacement, I HIGHLY....HIGHLY recommend The National Collision Company in Baldwin NY. I live in Ronkonkoma, and there are tons of places closer than the 45 minute drive it takes me to get there. That said, I wouldn't dream of taking my car anywhere else.

Hope no one here ever needs work, but if you do...let me know and I'll make sure you get a personal introduction to the owner. :tiphat:

Glad to hear everything came out fine -- especially now that you are down $20 bucks extra instead of the original $5 -- all to a good cause though (AK's forum)
