How to drop your temp by 30 degrees...

Im talking about outside temp haha. I drove up Mt. Lemmon(Tucson AZ) today on kinda a spur of the moment feeling. It was boiling hot out and I was thinking to myself 'I wonder how much cooler it will be up on the mountain?'. So I decided to make a quick trip up. Let me pre-apologize for my pics, as they are from my Blackberry. Mt. Lemmon's base is at about 2000ft above sea level, summit is about 8500ft and the entire thing is winding canyons with many blind turns and a steep grade(guessing about 6-8% most of the way). Its pretty sweet because it goes from desert to forrest about half way up. Its about 27 miles to the top which took me about 45 minutes, although I had to let the Z cool down twice on way up. I expected to see hot oil temps as I was ringing it out the whole way up and it was 107 degree out at the base. I let the oil temp hit 265 both times and then pulled over to let it come back down. I have made this trip before when the weather was moderate and the Z never got that high, expected under extreme conditions. Dont think I really want to invest in a oil cooler as I only make this trip a few times a year, and it gives me an excuse to pull over and take some pics :) As I got to the summit it was 79 degrees, breezy and absolutely gorgeous out. So my outside temp went down 28 degrees in just 45 minutes! Things I would like to point out...My air conditioning might as well blow out snow it so freaking cold(even with my hot engine). If I had to pic my favorite feature of the Z, I think that it would have to be the steering wheel. Like feeling a girls breast, there's just something that feels sooooo good about it. I have a better sense of the steering weight and feel from all the corners...and having both hands on the wheel which I dont always do during regular driving. Only thing that is troublesome is that my shifter is making a rattling noise when over 4g rpms??? Should I take it in? Regardless, this car is sick nasty in the hadling department. Now I know what to do if I really want to cool off.

Hey, guys! Quick question: Temps get up to 108 (Farenheit) in the summer, down here. My car has never gotten hot at all; the gauge remains steady at just about a little over 200F all year through. Question is, is that "normal"?? Not that I'm complaining about it---not at all!---but it's kinda weird, don't you guys think?! Thanks for the input.

What option package get's the steering wheel like "a girl's breast"? Is that a dealer installed option?

import111 06-08-2010 09:34 AM

Mt. Lemmon is awesome. Very good break from the heat and a fun road to get up there. Plus the Iron Door restaurant up there has a great breakfast.

I run the Stillen "Race" oil cooler and it helps a lot.

As for temps here, I've actually had a recorded temp of 113*F on my Z and my oil temps were only @ 200*F. And thats even with the A/C runnin full blast drivin on the highway (65~80mph) .The good thing was inside the cabin it was 33*F lol :happydance:

Thanks, dudes! I'm a 61-year-old man with very little savvy on mechanics/auto engineering, so your feedback's really appreciated. BTW, while at the former U.S. Immigration Academy, at Glynco, Brunswick, GA, we had a freak 119-degree day while qualifying with the weapon! It's been my most grueling weather experience ever! Humidity was a killer, too. While in the A.F., at Randolph AFB, TX, I experienced 113F a few times, XwC'. Saludos, amigos!

Unfortunately some of us folks don't have these things called "mountains."

I mean I could drive my car up one of Florida's vast and sprawling landfills, but I really don't want my clothes smelling like hot garbage.

SkyZ 06-08-2010 04:17 PM

i was expecting something stupid like drive with the hood open or something

Did you have the oil cooler installed here in Tucson? If so by who, and do you recommend them?

Yes. I had Stephen from IA Performance do my oil cooler install. He did a great job and used some extra bits to make it a better, more durable/clean install. Many months now with 0 issues with the oil cooler.

Do you meet up every Saturday? I would be willing to shoot up(the Z needs to stretch her legs every once in a while). I only have one Saturday off a month though:shakes head:, cause Im in the restaurant business.

XwChriswX 06-09-2010 03:16 PM

So far yeah, every sat night for almost a month now. Check out the First AZ Thread, we're trying to get more people to come up, then once it's consistent, we can figure out things to do and all. I'm willin to work out a swap where Tuscon guys come up one weekend, and then P-Towners can drive down since it's not far at all.
