Fun question for Auto guys

OK all you MT guys don't take it personal.
Everyone with autos which is the most fun.
Using the paddle's or the stick when its time to start pushing the z around a little bit?
I thought i would love the paddles and i do.but i find myself more and more
enjoying the stick:driving:

Zsteve 06-03-2010 07:08 PM

Ive always like the paddles when playing, oops, I mean when driving, oops, I mean when spanking other..............cars.

SophiaZ 06-03-2010 07:12 PM

I loves the paddles. But than again..I've never driven stick

JACKPAC 06-03-2010 07:15 PM

You "enjoy the stick"? Sorry, that one was too easy. I like the paddles myself.

Paddles only. Shifting forward to upshift just feels weird to me.

Wanna practice with mine?

Duncanz 06-03-2010 07:39 PM

I've had the fortune or misfortune to own both the MT, crashed with 4k on the odo (see my other post from last year,) and this time I went with the AT now with about 2k on it. Over all I like the AT better for most of my driving and prefer the paddles over the stick, similar issue as the Cyberium shifting on the stick seems awkward.

rudi 06-03-2010 07:44 PM

took to the paddles like a duck to water. Don't need to take my hands off the steering wheel.

Remember that scene in Fight Club when Brad Pitt's character says "wanna finish her off"?

Yeah... it's kinda like that. :D

billydsz 06-03-2010 10:30 PM

Paddles!! Just like my racing wheel on the xbox360 and forza. The 370z feels pretty good in that game, very similar to the real thing, just no g's. lol.

Jordo! 06-04-2010 01:25 AM

Paddles.

What's tragic is that the 7AT is faster than the 6MT :tiphat:

SkyZ 06-04-2010 01:52 AM

man i hate it when they put upshift to push up. its so opposite to what ive done all along. u pull down to shift up, it just makes sense, specially under hard accel. and the opposite for braking

davids81 06-04-2010 05:11 AM

I don't get it... so pushing "up" to upshift doesn't make sense??

But 2-3 shift has always been "up" for me...

BTW... if manuals were obsolete and inferior to the 7at technology, then why is the Nismo only available in 6MT??? Anniversary edition? Seems like Nissan has a soft spot for the old dead technology.

I thought for go karts down is upshift...?

Probably because they figured that the people who spring for the Nismo model will also be the people for whom operating a clutch pedal is an essential part of driving (never mind all that steering, braking, and accelerating...).

In short, qualia. For some that trumps raw performance.

What would have been interesting is if they had offered the Nismo with the GT-R trans... would have driven up the price too much tho'.

In racing terms in a racecar on a track it doesn't make sense. With almost any sequential shifter (which is essentially what the "stick" becomes in a 7AT in manual mode) momentum plays a large part in shifting. While accelerating, momentum is forcing you "back" into your seat and hence, an "upshift" should be a simple pull on the stick to shift whereas while braking, all the momentum is being forced forward and intstead of fighting that momentum, it is easier at that point to simply "push" forward for a downshift.

As is the case with street cars with a "civilian" form of sequential shifter, I guess auto manufacturers figure up is up and down is down. As a track driver it makes me crazy but what can you do? Although my DD is not a performance car, it is an auto with paddles and this "sequential" shifter in "manual" mode.

I had actually considered putting a true sequential shifter in my 6MT but I haven't heard of anyone manufacturing the unit yet.

Heard of these guys? Paddle Shifters, Sequential and Electronic - ASaP

I think they can set up something like this for any trans -- buddy of mine had this done for his Lotus -- works great.

antman22 06-04-2010 10:41 AM

paddles, allows me to keep hands on wheel.

That is sweet, but how much?

I honestly still don't see the problem. its not like your hand flies into the back when accelerating so what is the problem with the "up"shift?

I know plenty of people who bash these type of stuff because "racing drivers do it"

I know people who shake around their steering wheel while turning because they see F1 drivers do it. :shakes head:

Looks like $3 grand in the box -- see further this thread for details moremonkey.com • View topic - Ronin Sequential Shifter...

All things considered, not unreasonable.

haha the problem is habits, my habit is to pull back to up shift and push forward to down.

its like playing a fps game and having the vertical axis inverted.

Nostagia maybe. Both the Nismo and the 40th are slower than the 7AT :stirthepot:

Nick911sc 06-04-2010 01:00 PM

The tiptronic in my BMW is pull to upshift push to downshift.

I don't use it much anymore since I have the 6MT in my Z though. Can't really compare the two feelings lol

Yea serious - nissan really needs to adopt the euro model here... so much more intuitive for the car to upshift when stick is pulled back and vice versa...

Maybe not with your Z.

That was a joke but I have to address your other comments because it was spoken like someone that has never been to a track and hasn't felt the subtleties of steering feedback while cornering.

First of all, I'm not saying that I'm a "racing driver" but I do have quite a bit of track time under my belt and I consider myself a pretty good driver who knows a thing or two about feedback from the car and how to register it while behind the wheel. So bashing? No. Pracitcality? Yes.

As for "shaking the steering wheel around", small, very fast adjustments are usually (or should be) taking place while one is cornering as they are feeling where grip is beggining to become an issue while on track when you are pushing your car to it's grip limits. It was said that Colin Mcrae moved his hands to make just such adjustments so fast you could hardly see his hands move. And I'm not talking about in the dirt either.

Anyway to make a long story short, I wasn't bashing. But I don't expect you to know the difference anyhow. :icon14:

sonic370 06-04-2010 05:49 PM

I'm just slow i guess. This is my first AT with paddle's which i really like but
i find it easier to use the stick back to down shift forward to up shift.
keeps me focused on the road. but do find myself using the paddles more and more.
