In a dilemma ...

So I was offered the other day with a great oppurtinty for my car and 370 owners alike...

I cant say any names or any details, but i was offered a free turbo tuned kit (msrp for around 6-7k) in return for me letting them prototype the kit on my car, which would mean they would need to borrow my car for 3-4 weeks. I was planning on going turbo in the future, but never thought it would go so soon. I definitely want to go with this but after talking with friends, they told me some bad stories about having car problems after having a turbo prototyped on the car because lending your car to them is pretty much giving them "free reign" to tinker around with the engine and try different ways to have as much hp gains as possible. Now the shop will pay for any damages done by accident during the whole process, but you never know the long term effects that might happen, especially since its a brand new engine. This company is a well known company so I know it will be quality work, and the opportunity to be the first with a tuned kit is very appealing to me, but I would just like to get some feedback from you guys.

thanks!

I say do it! The good news is that this engine has already been in the G37s so it should mostly just be making it fit on the 370Z. If the company has already done a G37 with their turbo kit, then they should have the tuning and power side of it covered.

I would be worried. Damn they won't let you break in the engine first?

If its Greddy you better do it because i'll be next on the list their gonna offer it to.

DD has a good point...if they made a kit for the G37...chances are they need to make adjustments to the 370z for fitment..ask them if the kit is similar to the G37 one or if they even made one for it....

You probably just dropped anywhere from $34,000-$40,000 on this brand new car that I am sure you love and you are going to risk giving it to a shop to experiment on? That is crazy! Unless you are there and working on it with them so you can see what exactly is going on, I have to say I would be extremely worried! I would rather wait and pay the money so I would not be anyone's "test case" that's for sure!

I protyped for one of the first big turbo setups on the STI. It never ran right and eventually the engine blew. If it is a reputable shop, then that has less of a chance of happening, but be aware of the risks. If someone made me this offer I think I would have a terrible time deciding too.. I think I might ultimately go for it though because it is one hell of an opportunity and I tend to take calculated risks...

Tell them you will do it if they give you a kit for your other car also lol.

tvfreakazoid 02-14-2009 01:51 PM

Well make sure you get it in writing stating that they will repair the car if something should go wrong. That way you can sue them for the cost of getting it fixed. But if it's a reputable company and they said they fix or pay for any damages they cause I would go for it.

Cown3d 02-14-2009 02:04 PM

reputable company= yes
long as they are willing to sign something as stated above^

otherwise no

nogoodname 02-14-2009 02:08 PM

a reputable company would sign papers...if not...not reputable then

simple

chubbs 02-14-2009 03:50 PM

I say no. Too risky for me.
