Something bad happened, please help.

Well, as I approach the six-month anniversary of my dear car's purchase...some knucklehead decided to go and egg it. Hard.

There is a huge impact site, it resembles a crater on the earth from space...actual paint waves emanating out from the impact site, and you can see down to the metal in the troughs of said waves. A dent about 1.5" across and 1/4" deep.

Also, there is a more than generous amount of damage...the egg ate all the way through the clear coat and the base coat and down into the primer.

Now, I know I'm going to have to have quite a bit of repainting done, and I would like to know what kind of figure I am going to be looking at. I'm scared to think that it is going to cost several thousand to repaint, but if that's what needs to be done, so be it.

Can anyone help with a figure that is a fair price for repainting the rear bumper on a 09 370Z, along with the...I guess you'd call it a hatch? That part you open in the back to get to the "trunk" (I know I'm a tool, bear with me, I'm distressed, and I'm very bad at negotiating, hence why I paid full sticker for my car). Also, there is a roughly 2"x1" spot on the roof of the car, right next to the satellite radio receiver. Is it even possible to re-paint that?

Again, any help would be most appreciated, even steps on how to clean it, if possible (already tried water and ammonia, plus had it professionally detailed. It made it worse). I am just looking for a FAIR price for what I would pay (am I making sense? I don't really care about the actual amount, if it's what everyone else considers fair). Thank you all for your time.

*addendum* A police report has been filed, no leads.

Rear bumper....500-600

Zsteve 05-09-2010 10:11 PM

had to be the first on that. The egg ate thru it that fast? And it dented the car? Must of been a steriod egg.

go thru your ins

200-400 / panel, is what I've been quoted. Depends on the paint...

Contact your dealer. Let them get you an estimate. Then debate on if you want to claim that on your insurance or pay it out of pocket.

Deductible will apply...

fullmonty 05-10-2010 07:19 AM

Damn that really sucks. I'd agree that it would cost around $500 per panel

youll also have to figure in the cost of a private eye to track down the suspect and the gangster youll have to hire to slowly kill that person. Just saying....

Where are you located at? I am in Longview and had the same thing happen recently. Fortuantely I had a clear bra on my vehicle and it saved the paint... didnt even hurt the film. I do know of a paint and body shop guy here that is excellent and his rates are very reasonable. Send me a PM and I will get him your info... if you are interested.

Jeffblue 05-10-2010 08:55 AM

that sounds like it was a fossilized terradactyl egg

XwChriswX 05-10-2010 09:35 AM

I would track down every single 10-15 yr old male in a 5 mile radius and beat the ever loving sh*t out of them until they squealled and told me who did it...

kenchan 05-10-2010 11:11 AM

ouch op. insurance is your friend.

steveg78 05-10-2010 12:26 PM

Did you have VDC on? j/k

I know exactly what you mean about the damage. I had my Jeep egged 3 months after I bought it. On mischief night. I pulled over and took a walk into the neighborhood where it came from and found some kids. Shook them down and I noticed other kids driving away. I wanted so bad to beat the piss out of these kids. I saw some people looking out their windows of some houses and had a reality check. In the heat of the moment I just yelled at them and told them if I had seen who did it they would be in the hospital. I left. I should have called the cops right then and there because maybe that would have got the kids talking (if they did it or know who the a-hole was). And I would have gone through my insurance to have it fixed. I washed it off immediately and it still had a circular, radiating, rippled damage to the clear coat and paint.

My lesson, any damage to my car that is going to be more than deductible: I'm calling the cops and getting a report so that I can have it covered by insurance. That's what we pay for every month!
