any interest in instructions for custom 370z camera mount?

Over the weekend I built a camera mount for that bar behind the passenger/driver seats (forgive me, I don't know what it's called). The mount works extremely well, and cost me <$10 at a hardware store. Video from the mount has zero vibration, except for very large bumps in the road, where the video jitters for a split second. Other than that, 99% of video from it has been superb.

I was wondering if there was any interest for me to share the plans/pictures/video. Maybe someone with more experience can step in and make it look better (right now the mount itself looks hideous) or improve the function of it a bit more. It's certainly a good starting point.

ah yeah, i saw that thread but didn't like the idea of it being on the headrests due to vibration and seat movement. i'll go outside and take a couple pics. but i'm warning you, it's super ugly. its only advantage is how well it works.

give me a few minutes.

Doh, I forgot about the screw mount. it's nothing special. a 1/4"-#20 screw with a locking washer, and a piece of rubber from a mousepad to protect the camera.

I'm hesitant to post a video i uploaded to vimeo last night of me testing the mount for the first time. it involves me driving in a canyon in a not so legal way.

My mount was perfectly quiet, and vibration was not apparent at all. Mounting it to something that's a semi-direct component of the suspension would probably vibrate more, IMHO :).

I'll post up a video of my track events when I get home.

BTW, not to say yours is a BAD idea at all - just saying, the things you theorize are there, arent really there in the finished product lol.

no worries. this is my first attempt at anything like this, so in no way am i an expert at any of this. i definitely liked your mount, i just wasn't sure if it was what i wanted.

i'd love to see a video. maybe i'll post something more legal :P

thanks for not being too harsh :D

Rofl - Semtex posted a video of him busting like, 130 on public roads. That heathen.

I had more on my youtube that I didnt post up from my track event I went to. No granny driving around town though - thats kinda pointless/boring lol.

I have no doubt yours will work just fine though.

ah yeah, mine is nowhere near that bad (130mph), i just didn't know if the community condoned posting videos like that.

so, in that case, here is the vid: homemade camera mount test, canyon run on Vimeo ... it's not even bad. still getting used to the car (though it's not my first Z. had a 350z for 5 1/2 years before I got rear-ended a few weeks ago, and before that was a 300zx. love my Zs!)

Meh, he got knocked around a bit in the thread, but its not like he was racing anyone...and the roads were practically wide open.

Here was one of my track sessions:

awesome vid. i want to take my car to the track, but i don't have the guts to do it. zero experience w/ track driving, and i'm worried about insurance. though I guess public roads is far less safe for me and others...

either way, nice vid. my only beef with the mount is the rocking forwards and backwards during braking/accel, which is what i thought would happen when i initially saw your mount. other than that, you were right, it has no vibration (mine has a bit). now i want to build yours to compare lol

I actually kinda liked the slight motion...gave me a greater sense of speed. Maybe it was just me /shrug.

You can get insurance for a track event. I think its $250 per event. Something I should have done my first time out haha. Oh well :)

i was checking out the 40th anniv. at the dealer the other day and it was for a retractable cover, so that none of your stuff in the trunk is visible through the windows.
