Question about 7AT Downshift Rev Matching
Hey guys i was just wondering for all of you guys with the 7AT do you downshift when you're braking and coming to a stop or do you just let the engine downshift for you. I'm referring to when your using the SRM. Just curious...
|
when i drive AT cars i down shift to 3rd approacing a stop, or 2nd approaching a turn while braking. but you need to slightly tap the gas to support the blip even though nissan has the auto revmatch on downshifts it's not perfect.
|
SRM or SynchroReV Match is for 6 speed transmission ONLY. I changed the thread title to Downshift Rev Matching (DRM) which is what new 7AT transmission comes equipped with.
As for answer, I would let other 7AT people chime in because I do not own it :( |

I downshift all the time as I love the sound of the FI CBE when it downshifts. And it will help you slow down some too to keep from using the brakes so much. You do need to keep an eye on the rpms before you DS so that you dont have it too high in the new lower gear. But DS to 3rd and 2nd just sounds awesome. Some people think Im making the CBE sound that way cuz I wanna race.

if im coming to a complete stop, i just let it downshift for me. if im taking a turn then i'll cycle it down to 2nd. there are times when i just wanna hear the engine blip so i'll flick it on my own while braking :D

The only time I would downshift to stop is when trying to stop short or quickly slow the car down. The Z is an excellent engine braker with the auto on manual shift. Other than that. Just let the car downshift for you.
|
Personal preference really. If you are driving aggressively then manually down shifting would be preferable, if not let it down shift for you. I personally love the DRM and use it most of the time. As far as the car down shifting for you, I had to get use to that as this is the first auto I've had that does that. As the brakes are applied you can feel the down shifts happening and slowing you even more. I actually slightly over braked at times when I first got the car because of this.

I leave it in manual mode 95% of the time and I usually down shift it myself when coming to a stop, saves brake and sounds good with the Invidia exhaust! Plus when I'm on the highway, manual mode is the only mode that allows you to get to 6th and 7th gears...........for good mpg!!!!!

Does anyone feel hard stop(braking) when downshift between 3rd -->2nd??? eventhough u didn't step on brake peddal that hard?? and any clicking metal on metal noise when 2nd to 1st? Oh, I'm taliking about when you just let the engine downshift.

Yeah like others I usually let the car do the downshifting automatically when coming to a stop... it's kind of like holding down the clutch in a manual when coming to a stop. In a manual you don't downshift from 5-4-3-2-1 when coming to a stop so it sounds kind of weird in the auto when you do the same thing. But coming into a corner or such it just sounds bad *** when you go from 3rd to 2nd and rip it

The only thing I don't like about the 7AT's "blip" is that it seems to decrease braking pressure while it's doing the blip. Might be minimized with a lightweight+underdrive balancer/pulley...

here they tell us to do it because it means you wont wear out your brakes but I honestly don't like doing it. I CAN do it but im just happy with clutch, second, brake and let go of the clutch for turning. |
I'm not talking about long drawn out stops... i'm talking about quick stops where you can be in 4th gear and then just push in the clutch and the brake instead of downshifting. It's just common sense. I also do not agree with your statement saying it's dangerous to be in a higher gear when you stop opposed to being in a lower gear. If your in ANY gear and make a mistake you'll still lurch forward and stall.

most of the time I tend to put the car in neutral if im just slowing down to a stop
|
If it's a sudden stop then obviously it's clutch in and stab the brakes. But a controlled stop should have you going through the gears. Here is an example; many years ago I was rear ended by a pick up truck while I was coming to a stop. I was slowing down but noticed the guy behind me was not. This all happened very quickly and if I had not been in the right gear it would have been much worse. When I noticed he wasn't stopping I quickly punched the throttle began to turn left on a side road. He still hit me but I was almost out of his way by then and had very little damage to my car. Had I been in a high gear there would have been no way I would have gotten out of his way and would have been sandwiched between him and the car in front of me. In that case I would have sustained injury and major vehicle damage. This is just one of many things over the years that experience has taught me that justifies having your vehicle in the right gear at all times.

True. if I stop for an intersection I tend to still roll to it in second with the clutch pressed in and then shifting to first when im at a stop.
|
I'm in manual mode 99% of the time and drive it the same way I would a manual, changing down to slow or to bring it to a stop. Had my S15 which was a manual for over seven years 60,000 Km and never had to replace the break pads.
|
My last manual was a 03 VW Jetta GLI with over 75,000 km with original brakes.

D is always at the minimum of 1500 rpm when in gear most of time its in a gear I cant get into with M since its just at the limit |

That's an example not based on actual data - but relevant as I've tested it. I just don't remember the numbers... |
I was always told to use the breaks instead of the engine to slow down. Breaks are cheap to replace compared to the engine

this is the reason why i got my z with stick* lol and im pretty happy with that
|
so after reading all these posts, it seems like it really doesn't matter which way u do it. Just personal preference i guess. I'll mix it up i guess since i like downshifting sometimes to hear the engine blip and other times i can just let it downshift it self.
