Where's the torque??

Just test drove the new Z auto and noticed that there isn't much low end torque. I looked up the specs and noticed that max torque is reached past 5000 rpm. So, unless I keep the auto in sport mode/high rev , I prob won't get much of the kick in the arse torque.

For comparisons, I noticed that 335i reaches its max torque (300) at shocking 1500 or so RPM.

I believe it makes almost 200 at 2500 rpm and it maxs out at around 3500 rpm. You seriously didn't notice the torque? The 370 is no honda.

it isnt a BMW either... but considering its a NA 6 cylinder... i think it does pretty good.

The 335i has two sequential turbos. They spool up very quickly giving it such good low end torque. For a naturally aspirated 3.7V6 this car has a pretty flat torque curve, but I agree that a little more torque would be nice.

I'm not sure I'd ever think it's enough, always more more more.

Thanks guys for the reply.

It was just a ten minute drive and I couldn't really get on the car with the salesman. I knew it wasn't going to have neck breaking torque but I thought it would have a bit more kick than what I experienced. A few things that came to my mind are:

1. Perhaps the the 7AT starts at 2nd gear if you "baby" the car?
2. Obviously the car hasn't been broken in yet
3. You need to keep the reves pretty high to feel the power. I presume the way to do this with 7AT is in manual mode

Again, I LOVED mostly everything about the Z but was slightly let down by power delivery and exhaust note. Perhaps, I need to go for another test drive or get my a$$ recalibrated :D

Absolutely right - you can't ever have enough power and torque :)

I guess it's a bit of unfair comparison but my old 335i had great low end torque and power delivery. I know it's hard to believe but I sold Viper GTS to get the 335 and really didn't miss Viper that much because the car felt THAT good.

I am positive that once you get on the Z, you will get similar performance of 335.

Good point. Speaking of Honda, I also test drove the Accord coupe V6 and felt surprisingly good... for a honda :D

It will certainly outperform a 335. It just matches a 135 (basically a lighter version of of a 335 with the same power delivery) in Edmund's latest test. The 335 is better matched to the G37 in performance/weight/luxury.

The big question I have is will the 7AT perform as well as the manual. Can't wait to see some 1/4 / track times between the 2.

I've been hoping someone will test both the manual and auto at the same time since the numbers are all over the place already. Doubt I get my wish. :(

i wanna see a dyno on the 7AT

Skaterbasist 02-02-2009 05:03 PM

The VQ37VHR has a flat torque line. Meaning that, although peak torque is only reached at around 5000 RPM's, you still have plenty of torque all around.

It's no 335i in terms of low end torque, but for an NA engine, it makes great power all around.

Anyone here test driven the Evo X MR? I am NOT endorsing the car or anything but that 4 banger tubo felt surprisingly fast and torquier than the Z. I am thoroughly confused because I know the new Z should out perform the MR.

I am starting to wonder if there was something wrong with the Z I test drove.

Their performance should be very close, actually. The Evo base costs something like $38000 and has a dual clutch tranny. It has slightly less HP but better grip. They are pretty close in acceleration but the EVO will probably start to fall off as speeds get higher.
