nissan mechanic software

i know with General motores they had the ESI Techline. VERY VERY hard to aquire but with it there was no bolt/nutt/ part or specification you didnt know. and could basically fix and replace anything on a GM car and it would show you the tools needed. was designed for the dealer mechanics. does Nissan have anything like this floating aroung?

Snap-on and Mitchell have programs like ShopKey and Alldata, but you gotta be a shop to get that stuff, and it covers all brands. Nissan has one im sure, as will all car manu's for their specific brand. Getting a hold of one... power to you, it'll likely be illegal.

cab83_750 03-28-2010 05:39 PM

It would be great if it's not illegal!

Btw I'm surprised that we legally have the workshop manual here. I believe that a Porsche site had to take it down due to copyright laws. :(

jtown82 03-28-2010 07:59 PM

well yea non are legal. GM forced EBay to remove all sales of ESi Techline.

fact is software designed by the company itself shouldnt be illegal for the ordinary car owner.

6spd 03-28-2010 09:14 PM

well they write it and that means they decide who it gets distributed too, anyone else who has it breaking copywrite laws. major sux...

One will be out sooner than later. Check ebay!

i think i seen it floating around, but don't know if it's real

Pharmacist 03-29-2010 02:39 PM

wouldn't it be illegal for them to copyright such software since that affects customer choice? doesn't a car owner have a legal right to have a car fixed at the shop of his choosing and not just a dealer?

yes and no, dealers make it impossible for most shops to possess the same equipment by charging $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ out the a$$ for it, if they even decide to sell it. most often that answer is no. the consumer can fix whatever he or she wants anywhere they want, but that doesnt mean they have the right to possess the same diagnostic technology as the dealer.

Its NOT the software that is protected under the copyright. It is the intellectual content that the software is just presenting to the screen.

Nothing would prevent a competitor service place to spend millions to reverse engineer a 370Z for the purpose of blueprinting everything and writing the repair content that would then be under their own copyright. But as you can see that just wouln't be cost-effective now would it?

considering it's my car that i bough with my money, i should have the right to know how it works and how to fix it if it breaks. besides, what's in it for nissan anyway? i don't think they get paid anything if you take a car to the stealership to be fixed.

what would this intellectual content be? we already have the service manual here that contains almost everything about the car. the only thing i know of that some car manufacturers keep secret is the manufacturer-specific non-standardized OBDII codes and key chip codes, etc.... That is what i believe should be illegal since it impairs customers right to choose and practially forces you to pay the exorbitant fees to the stealership to have the car fixed.

Can't wait someone to start posting to this thread and turns it into "music download, movie download" copyright debate. :inoutroflpuke::happydance:

yes, you have the right to know what is wrong with the car and how to fix it, but that doesnt mean the dealer has to disclose exactly what methods they use to diagnose and fix the car, just like if you bring your car to me, im not gonna tell you the steps of what I did step by step with instructions because that would eventually lose business for me because people would be fixing their own problems. same idea at the dealer, why would they want to lose work by telling you what to do to fix your car. We have the service manual which is by and large more than enough for the average joe to fix things.

Nissan may not get payed by a dealer for each repair, but the dealers are the only ones offered the use of the proper diagnosis equipment. This is why the dealer claims to have the best service, because they can more easily find problems than independent shops. I sucks very much for us that the manu's and dealers protect their repair software knowledge to greatly and we have to scavenge for the answers were looking for, but thats how it goes.

BTW the greater the influx of electronics that is now happening and will continue to happen will put a lot of small shops out of business. It is already starting, and the dealer will do nothing but thrive from the fact that they will be the only ones capable of diagnosing, repairing, and reprogramming these systems.

Pharmacist 03-30-2010 10:26 PM

you missed my point though, my point was that i have the right to have my car fixed at the shop of my choice. this protectionism by the manufacturers basically twists your arm into having to go to their dealers even after the warranty expires. this practice by nature is anti-competitive which i believe there are laws against. dealers are not maintaining a competitive edge by having good prices or good customer service or even good technicians. they do it by having a monopoly over diagnostic information and equipment.

interestingly the eu and canada recently passed laws against this kind of behavior. you can read all about it here: RightToRepair.org - Right To Repair Coalition

6spd 03-31-2010 04:45 PM

I see your point exactly and yes, their are plenty of right to repair laws, but the technology used by manufacturers, since thats what we are talking about, can be used however they see fit. They designed it, so they can sell it how they see fit, by not selling it, they force people to have to go to the dealer for many repairs. Unless the laws change dramatically, this will continue, and now that the government has its dirty hands in some of the manu's, I cant see that happening anytime soon.

Dont get me wrong, Im with you 100%. I agree that what manu's are doing is wrong and the direction car technology is headed is even more wrong. But as far as the here and now is concerned, they do what they do because they can, in the most basic of terms!
