Squeeks and Rust?

I've owned my Z for about six months now and I drove it in the rain for less than 100 miles. The Z is always garaged and has 4300 miles on it and it has a good amount of surface rust on the exhaust where it attaches to the mid pipe, looks like crap from behind. Anyone else experiencing this?

Also, my drivers seat side bolsters squeek when when I rock back and fourth, driving me nuts. I'm just wondering if I can get the dealer to replace them.

Other than that the car is the shizzle. Replaced my 2001 Mustang Bullitt which had a forged motor and SC, putting out around 500 hp. Don't miss it a bit. ;)

I notice my suspension is a bit squeaky when I get in and out of the car, no problem with rust though, well I guess it doesnt rain much out here in the desert...

I wouldn't worry about the rust. Exposed metal+Water= rust. I assume when you say rust you arre just talking about on the surface, and not rotted all the way through.

Rust-through can obviously start out as surface rust. Odds that its a problem are low, but keep in mind that Toyota is recalling trucks with rusted through frames, so it can happen. This is something to watch over time.

I can see the rust on the exhaust from behind as I approach my garage driving the daily commuter. My driveway slopes away from the garage a bit, so I get a good low look at the Z's backside every day.

Use a metal brush to clean the rust off then spray with rustoleum!

OKC370Z 03-18-2010 06:56 AM

It's just surface rust and the point is that I own a 2003 Murano that is parked outside and has been for years and there is absolutely no rust on the exhaust until you get to the headers. I thought the exhaust from the headers back on the Z were Stainless, are they not?

Like I said it's surface rust but it's pretty thick and it looks like crap because you can clearly see it from behind. I'm dissapointed really, a $40K care and the exposed portion of the exhaust rusts like it does.

You're gonna have to buy a stainless steel aftermarket exhaust. Don't look now, but OEM exhausts rust. All of them. Oxygen is a bitch.

Your bolsters squeak? The fabric? confused...

MY suspesion is fine the squeak is coming from the side bolster of the drivers seat and it is quite annoying, I will be pushing to have the seave replaced. A $40K should not have seats that squeak in you ear as you move in the seat.

Then watch the rustoleum burn off.

You'd have to paint with a high-temp paint. Though I believe Rustoleum has one. You can even find "crinkle" high-temp paint if that's the look you want.

I had the same squeak in the left side of mine for first 400 miles. I was ready to take it back for a fix. I found, that when my seat was back as far as possible and the back reclined a bit, the bottom of seat back was rubbing the plastic trim behind seat when I sat in the seat. I moved seat forward a bit and problem fixed. While in your seat reach behind and and see if the leather is rubbing against the plastic.

Not sure how many are aware of the surface rust that can be pick up from our national highways, aka "graderdust".

A few years back my Titan started to show rust spots on the paint surface, needless to say I was upset an confronted the Nissan Dealership.

To my surprise they said it wasn't Nissans paint job , it was a result of "graderdust"-when the roads are plowed during winter conditions the grader blade leaves small filings (ever notice sparks coming off blades ?)of metal that are left on the roads.

When we drive over or past other vehicles the dust is thrown up on the sides and undercarriages of our cars/trucks.Those small filings if not removed right away can imbed into the wax/clear coats an begin to rust on the surface of paint an chrome.

My dealer told me to get my vehicle detailed with a process know as a acid wash , then rewaxed .

Side note: Mid Apr my 40th AnnE arrives , cant wait to drive it ,an as to a lil purple in the paint who the hell cares OMG its a 370Z.it could be passion pink an it would still be cool...OMG its a 370Z!!!!

I really love my car, but there is one thing about it that I don't like... this is the squeakiest, rattliest car I've ever owned, and I've owned a Ford Escort. Seriously, Nissan, what is up with that?

Graderdust, eh? I hope you're dealer is joking about this. If not I'd be looking for another dealer. I too live in the great white north and have never heard this in my near 40 years of driving in the winter. And I'd like some more info on this acid wash your dealer speaks of. Is a mild one with vinegar in the soapy water or a tad stronger using sulphuric acid?:shakes head:
