Road Conditions

I apologize in advance for this rant:

What the fck is up with the roads in NJ/NY area? There are potholes bigger than Pamela Anderson's breasts every 30 feet. I have been to third world countries that have had better roads. This is embarrassing. Every ramp into and off the high way is in such a poor quality that I am afraid of getting off highways! Not that the highways themselves are any better, on my way to NYC, it felt like I was off-roading. Why is it that the state/city has money to hire a million cops in every damn county, but not enough money to fix our roads?

Pheonix 02-27-2010 12:20 PM

Did ya'll recently get a crap ton of snow? I don't know about you, but here in Memphis the situation was much the same. The weather was so much worse than usual, and the roads couldn't handle it. Our main interstate looked like a minefield for over a week, before they finally got around to patching the damn things.

These potholes and disgusting road conditions were there before the snow. They have been there since I moved here in Oct.

It is not because the snow, the ton of snow is making it worst. But NJ/NY roads just plain SUCKS!

I drove up there when I had my 350Z and my car came back with rattles everywhere. I tought I was in a circuit track trying to go around the potholes and the bad design of the roads all over NJ.

Pheonix 02-27-2010 12:30 PM

I understand that. I was jukin' and juvin' all over the lanes to avoid the worst of them. Kept expecting blue lights in my rearview, but then...I wasn't the only one playing "defensive driver", heh

Hugoneus 02-27-2010 12:36 PM

Yesterday, a woman in front of me hit a large pothole on the offramp. She nearly went off the road, when I passed her, she was in tears. I am going to write a letter about this particular pothole. Shame on our city officials.

Benibiker 02-27-2010 12:39 PM

It's the same here in Honolulu, there's parts of town I don't go due to the potholes that could swallow my Mini...

During the day, I can try to doge them. But at night, they can take you by surprise. And I find myself swearing at everything for about 10 minutes. And by that time, I will hit another one. So the whole time I am driving I am swearing! Fck! I have to get my nerves under control.

I'm the same way, people behind me probably think I drunk but I'm just swerving around all those pot holes.

I guess the roads are full of potholes here in PA but I wouldn't know as they have been snow covered for weeks now! This whole winter scene has become absolutely unacceptable. I'm just about ready to pack it in and move to Southern Florida.

This.

There are some down in South Jersey but it is nowhere near this bad at all -- and they are fixed within the day, usually.

Daishi 02-27-2010 01:47 PM

lol nj just sucks.. the charge just about the most for insurance.. and anything motor vehicle related than any other state but are in the top 5 for the worst roads.. What do they spend our tax money on? thats yet to be determined.

Your insurance is so expensive because New Jersey is very dense and very urban. Despite the urban environment that usually causes people to take public transportation, most in NJ still own a car. This means more accidents, more theft and more uninsured drivers -- all of which drive the cost up.

Our taxes are high for similar reasons. Move someplace more rural and your taxes will significantly drop -- but so will your services.

CrownR426 02-27-2010 02:13 PM

I'm in north jersey, just took my z out for a little session in the snow and it was great!
My usual spot was too much but I managed to find another one!
Just have to be careful for the snow that falls from the trees and branches!
Enjoy! :D

These are your shovel ready projects that the stimulus bill fixed.

Oh your close. I live in Passaic county.

Modshack 02-27-2010 02:29 PM

Apparently you guys aren't paying enough taxes....LOL......

I used to live in Joisey, but got out in '98...

Hugoneus 02-27-2010 02:39 PM

Our taxes pay for the 1 million cops that are everywhere. Thank God for that!

buweet 02-27-2010 03:26 PM

Potholes? Potholes?

Then don't come to New Orleans if potholes are a concern. We have potholes that can consume a 370 whole. Just look it as autocross experience. Who Dat!

fullmonty 02-27-2010 03:37 PM

I don't think they are that bad for me, but I've grown up with it so maybe I just don't realize it.

370zproject 02-27-2010 03:41 PM

i find it hard to belive there are highways worse then memphis highways

You have potholes because your taxes arn't keeping up with the increase cost of labor and materials, and because of better fuel efficiency. In short, since more cars are running more fuel efficient these days and require less gas to operate (including hybrids that require even less or none at all) there is less taxes revenue being created since everyone pays a per gallon tax. (So really hybrids are using the road for free when running on no gas.) Every state gets a federal dollar match based on what they generate with state gas taxes and since each state is creating less tax revenue they get less of a funding match from the federal government which equals less transportation funding, which equals less road repairs, which equals that big a** pot hole you just hit this morning.

Expect things to get worse if state governments don't find another way to raise taxes for transportation. The gas tax is a thing of the past and won't work with the developement of alturnitive fuel sources. The best way would be to install GPS in every car and charge by how many miles you drive a year but obviously this creates privacy issues, but thats the best way to replicate the gas tax since it used to be the more miles you drove the more fuel you bought.

CN: fuel efficiency = less tax revenue for each state and its compounding every year so get used to potholes until the tax method is changed.

We have pretty good roads here in NC, but out car registrations (3% when you register/title) are dedicated "Highway use Taxes" which go to pay for that stuff (locally)

Yeah, vehicle registrations do go to transportation too but cover only a very very small portion of the revenue. The midwestern and Northeastern state's roads deteriorate MUCH faster then the southern states due to the freeze/thaw cycles which is the number one reason roads fall apart and thus the replacement cycle and O and M costs are much much higher. Thats why the southern states like NC generally have better roads.

Montez 02-27-2010 06:05 PM

Hell come to Dallas, our roads in the city limits are horrrrible! Pot hole central here, had my first bent rim 3 weeks ago........ughh. I recently saw on the news that pot hole/road repair is not in the budget this year....go figure.

Jeffblue 02-27-2010 06:36 PM

there are a ton of potholes in the north east because "they" would rather fix them once. at the end of the winter, instead of fixing every pothole as they turn up, they just go in and do them in great numbers at the end of the season. basically, a pothole that formed in december and a pothole formed in march are likely to be fixed at the same time.

it makes sense. if you have a leak in your ceiling are you going to recarpet your floor every time it rains, or are you gonna wait till you fix your roof?

However, its still annoying and dangerous and "they" should fix all open potholes at least once a month.

blinkme323 02-28-2010 03:04 AM

The potholes are bad, I agree. But, what's even worse is being blasted by huge chunks of salt everytime you drive. Especially with the 370's propensity to kick up debris.

JvKintheUSA 02-28-2010 07:37 AM

I lived in NE Ohio (Cleveland), and we had similar roads there: pot holes, rocks etc. I had to zig-zag around them. I decided to move to Georgia, where the roads are much better. I do not understand why municipalities do not spend some money to lay down decent asphalt. I know it cost money, but not doing anything make the area look like a 3rd world country - and it is one of the main reasons I left NE Ohio.

I'd hope the roads are better in Georgia than Ohio, as there arn't as many freeze/thaw cycles which kills the roads

Hugoneus 02-28-2010 12:28 PM

I am just disappointed that the US government bullshits its citizens about war on crime/war on drugs/war on terror but there is no war on potholes! I want a fcking war on potholes!
