Some do, some don't. My conversation was faster:

Me: Hi, I test drove one of your Zs a couple of months ago and want to buy the Brilliant Silver one you have on your lot. I'll give you $34,900 for it (sport, touring, splash guards, f+r mats, VIN etch).

Sales Manager: I can't sell it to you for that price.

Me: OK, no problem. Take care. <click>

Sales Manager: <audible sigh=""> <audible sigh> OK, I'll sell it to you.

Me: Great! I'll be down in one hour with a check. <click>

Ask 370Zsteve to broker you a deal.

With all of the internet shopping people do why would you **** around on pricing like that?

Picking up a white 6spd 370z tom. And this was all done over the phone at another dealer. I don't get why that is so hard for Jim Russo

I think this salesman is making a mistake. Everyone, including this 62 year old, buys things on line these days and many close to final or final prices are posted. I bought my Z on-line with an honest offer from the dealership that was an excellent no boloney price ($29,000) and gave my immediate acceptance with no games on either side. I presented my check the next day and drove home with a smile on my face. I will go back again as he earned my loyalty. It's a hyper-competitive and hyper-sophisticated world out there these days. Times have changed, not sure if for better or for worse, but those who don't change with them will soon become extinct---like it or not.

Well.... I agree. To a point. If you're that salesman and your income relied upon "maximizing" a final price, don't you think you'd try and get a higher price?

Don't get me wrong... bartering (or dickering) about price should be encouraged. But to cut-off a guy without "some" second or even third chances, would be like ... (?)

I guess it's a two-way street.... and one shouldn't be too quick to throw off a salesman. Even if that person is obviously going too high. Give them another chance or two.... they'll probably move.

nextbesthing 01-26-2010 07:37 PM

bottom line is he lost a sale

VCuomo 01-26-2010 09:28 PM

You can't really blame the salesman - he's just following his dealership's policies on negotiating prices.

When I bought my Z I went to a dealer about 5 miles from where I work, test drove a car, then told them exactly what options and color I wanted, and also told them that I was only willing to pay invoice (and I even gave them that price, quoted straight from edmunds.com). Then I asked them if they would do the deal. The sales dude says "I gotta go get my General Manager.", then the GM comes over, repeats the MSRP price (which I had already given to them too). I said "No, will you do the deal at invoice?" Then he asks "Are you ready to sign right now?" I said "No, I'm on my lunch hour, but if you are willing to do the deal at invoice and you can get the exact car I want, I'll be back at 7pm when I get off from work." The conversation went back and forth like that for a few more minutes, but long story short is he wouldn't say if he would or wouldn't do the deal, so I left.

The next day I found a dealer 30 miles from work that I contacted over the internet, then talked to the sales guy over the phone and, after getting approval from his GM, he said he'd do the deal I wanted - and I had never even set foot in his showroom. Plus he had the exact car I wanted in his inventory. Guess where I bought my car from?

Eventually these car dealerships that want to do business like they did back in 1972 are going to go broke and be replaced by dealers like the one I bought from. The buying public is way more informed today, thanks to the internet, than ever. The old-school hardball tactics just aren't going to work very well much longer (and I'm 50+, not a young guy who grew up with the internet).

Is this his personal choice, or the dealer policy? Would the dealers here like to chime in on this question?

...carbon copy of my very mutually respectful buying experience described in my previous post. This is business 2010 style.

Yup, personally I'd rather make a guaranteed $400 vs a possible $800.

"Mutually Respectful" being the key words here. Being an A$$hole rarely gets the results you desire...

The bold is the best part. I showed this to a buddy of mine, simply because of that line. Did you actually say that?

The lines I quoted from him were his uber moments filled with fail.:icon14:

Just to be fair, I have actually found dealerships that refuse to give an internet quote. They want to "show" you the vehicle at the dealership.

That's fine, but many people have already driven or looked at the vehicle extensively and just want a price, not to be d*cked around by a car salesman.

Yea, everyone seems to find that one line the funniest lol. But yes, I didn't add or embellish any part of that conversation.

And don't get me wrong I would never treat a salesman like this unless, they asked for it. All I did was ask for a price, which every other dealership gave me online, and then he asks me If I want to know the MSRP. Really? Like I cant read the number in front of the $

I know. Any time I am car shopping I am certain I already know a million times more about the car than any salesman would ever know, so I don't even want to deal with them. Although I do have to schedule a test drive for anything I would be interested in, the salesman are more or less a complete waste of my time.

Matt 01-28-2010 03:55 PM

I would have been uncomfortable to be on either end of this conversation.

If I was the salesman, I would have just told the customer he could either speak to a manager or go to one of the other dealers he was already speaking with.

If I was the customer, I would have said "ok, thank you", and called someone else.

He lost the sale. in the age of the internet, the car shopper is King.

I have to add to my earlier post. I neglected to mention that the dealer I wound up buying from also has an "Internet Salesperson". She quoted me $1500 higher than the deal I made with the Sales Manager. And she would not come down in price and kept sending me emails 3x's daily asking me to come down and talk. Basically she spammed me for a week.

I think dealers are still trying to come to grips with the age of the internet.
