Laptop HD wiped by the Bose Subwoofer?

This happened to anyone else? is the subwoofer in the bose sound system even strong enough to do this to a hard drive? maybe it was something else that cause the HD to die but sad time ahead for me.

I do not think the subwoofer in the Z is that powerful or even close enough to the laptop for this to happen.
~Are you able to boot into the laptops bios and check to see if the system sees the HD. Depending on the size/brand it will say something like "Western Dig 250GB," that is not anywhere near exact but close enough.

what makes you think the subwoofer did this?

antman22 01-21-2010 09:02 PM

thatd have to be an awfully powerful magnet. are you sure you didn't just take a turn too fast and it flew across the back? :P

Magnets are not a computer's best friend.

word? im on my desktop right but my laptop is... where is it? OH NO! its in my trunk!!!!!:rofl2:

Although it may be possible.. i highly doubt the magnet in that speaker is that strong enough to do that..
Slap a new HD in there and call it a day.. hopefully you have backups of your stuff.

gumpy 01-26-2010 03:52 AM

turns out it was a faulty connection between the hd and the laptop prolly caused by corners... =)

Jikhead and 370zsteve, magnets can wipe hds... try leaving your laptop on your home subwoofer if you have a 5.1 sound system.

Cjanik 01-26-2010 08:03 AM

if you had the laptop running, then shaking the HD while its running is a recipe for failure.

I wasn't questioning the whole theory of magnets, but just our Bose factory sub being able to do it. I had recently took apart the sub to look at it, and it's two little 4" speakers with a tiny magnet. Plus, my work laptop is in my backpack everyday back there.

I've had 12" subs wipe out harddrives about 2 ft away. Very possible as the magnets are very powerful. I don't know about your stock system doing that, maybe if you set the laptop directly on it.

HD

I take my Dell Laptop with me everyday to work and it rides on top of the subwoofer. No issues after 11 months.

gumpy 01-31-2010 12:53 AM

yeah it wasn't the sub

the data was all there when reconnected with the laptop.

jikhead - didn't know the magnets were that small... makes sense though because the bass isn't very good at all
