HF jackstand recall

If anyone here uses HF jackstands, an urgent recall is out. About damn time, mine collapsed on me two-ish years ago.

Dang I figured the frame would buckle before the pawl would let loose under weight.

I wonder what other brand names may be associated with that design. Scary stuff and is why I always leave my jack engaged even through stands are in place.

JARblue 05-19-2020 04:04 PM

Holy shít!

I like my little HF 3ton jack stands because the lowest setting is so low (model 38846). But I'm glad to have a couple of nicer sets like the new Esco jack stands I just got last week.

redondoaveb 05-19-2020 04:16 PM

I just went out and checked my jackstands, they're ac delco but they do have that same style pawl system

The article says the defect was attributed to old (aging) machinery in the factory :twocents:

BettyZ 05-19-2020 05:47 PM

For clarity, and what jar said, the manufactory tooling wore down to the point that the pawl didn't fully engage.

Typical Hazard-Fraud murder-stands.

I got 2, 12 ton jacks. So, I'm safe..............................I hope.

Thanks for sharing this! I have HF stands but mine are a different model.

Pittsburgh is the proprietary brand for HP right?

Do we return and they replace?

Zoren 370 05-20-2020 04:11 AM

Checked the part number have 2 pairs.

Any recommendations for other brands for replacement?

So far used it with the Z and Corvette it held pretty well.

When the Z broke down left it up on the same jacks for months!

And sometimes I’ll crawl underneath just to take pictures!

Damn I could have ended like a squeezed empanada!

My Z has been up on HF jack stands for over a year. I put a floor jack under the car for support and was careful not to bump the car when I crawled underneath to check the model number. Even though mine weren't recalled, I don't trust them now lol

SouthArk370Z 05-20-2020 10:32 AM

I didn't get my stands from HF but checked them anyway. Brands and model numbers are different. It gave me a good excuse to give them a thorough inspection. I discovered that I hadn't done the retaining tab on one of them properly and the post will fall out if you turn the stand upside down - will correct that before I use again.

Does anyone know what part(s) are causing the problem? As simple as a jackstand is, there's not too much that can go wrong.

JARblue 05-20-2020 12:25 PM

Check the engagement on the pawl per BettyZ (Post #6).

FWIW, I never engage the retaining tab. I find it's easier to stack them for storage, which requires removing the inserts. Easy enough to avoid turning them upside down.

Ah. I missed that on my first read. Thanks.

Not something I'm really worried about (it doesn't affect the functioning of the stand) but it might save some sore toes down the line.

cv129 05-20-2020 06:51 PM

I've never engaged that tab either....actually I've never paid attention to that tab until reading JAR and SouthArk's comments....I just always assumed that I shouldn't hold it upside down lol.

:iamwithstupid: #footinmymouth #selfincriminate #learnsomethingnew

I never raise the inserts above the bottom height, I've never felt comfortable conceptually. Besides, my 6 tons (HF) is quite tall to start with, and the 3 tons (Craftsman) give ample of height for the simple things I do.

I'll probably go for more reputable units :usa:, or at least something rated ridiculously more than my car, like 2 pairs of 12 tons :p, if I have to be entirely under the car for a long time.

danegrey 05-20-2020 06:59 PM

Well I got two that are in the recall, so I will take them back and get my gift card, thanks for the post, would not even have thought about it...

Z_ealot 05-20-2020 07:24 PM

No jack stands from HF here, just good old 6 ton craftsman :)

Zoren 370 05-21-2020 02:08 AM

Is the gift card only good at HF for purchase?

Darn it when I needed the stands to hold my RCF up in the air to ceramic coat the wheels!

Now Im left with a gift card!!!

Do strippers accepts gift cards for lap dance?

MZ DAIZY 05-21-2020 05:46 AM

Only Chinese strippers.
