Nissan "no-show" at the auto show

The wife and I spent a few hours at the annual local auto show today. After making our way around the expo center I wondered how I missed the Nissan area, so I pulled out the map but couldn't find Nissan on it anywhere. Just about every other auto-maker was there but Nissan was a no-show. I was surprised and a bit disappointed. I had been looking forward to checking out the roadster in person. Any ideas why Nissan would skip the show?

No Nissan:

We did see lots of other cool cars. Always been a fan of Porsche:

My wife liked the plaid in the GTI:

There was a Nissan Dealer on the way home so we stopped by just to check out the Roadster. I was planning to ask someone at the Dealer why Nissan wasn't at the show but during the 10 minutes or so we were there checking out cars nobody approached us. I've never had that happen at a dealer before. What's up Nissan? :shakes head:

They must be doing OK on sells.

I went last year to a Motor Trend Car Show and all Nissan had for display was a lonely 370Z.

That has happened to me but at the BMW and Lexus dealerships.

Nissan has been skipping a lot of auto shows because of the reduction in car sales. Since 2007, nissan total sales have dropped near 40% and the only true seller is the altima. Even sentra is so hard hit that this year, it got a new fascia, navigation, upgraded suspension, interior updates and instead of nissan raising the price... they dropped the price by $1,000.
Prices have dramatically increased on infiniti packages and a mild increase on the Z tranny and touring package to cover some of the costs. Also they will again for the 3rd year, will only appear in very few auto shows limited to major cities. It costs nissan millions of dollars a year to attend auto shows... so until car sales start picking up? This will be the trend.

I went to the auto show in LA and Nissan wasn't there either. I figure if they aren't at the LA show, they're not going to any show.

I flew up to the Detroit Auto Show last year to see the Audi Sportback (A7) and noticed that Nissan didn't show up there either. That actually led me to check out the 370Z (at my dealer) and Bam... Purchased one!

ctzn 01-17-2010 03:21 AM

Didn't see them at the SF International auto show this year either come to think of it...

zmyride 01-17-2010 04:07 AM

I know why.

I was looking for the Z at the auto show too, but only saw one nissan car, the electric Leaf. So i asked one of the girls and she told me that Nissan is banking on the Leaf and that's all they want to focus on at autoshows.

kenchan 01-17-2010 07:55 AM

Utah?

UNKNOWN_370 01-17-2010 09:38 AM

For the 09 international auto show, here in dallas. They featured the Z on the platform, 09 maxima, 09 altima rogue and murano. The state fair auto show nissan was missing but infiniti was there. The fort worth auto show they didn't show up at all. So that's where my conclusion was drawn that they probably do only select cities.

nogoodname 01-17-2010 10:14 AM

Infiniti was there...lol

Auto shows arent fun anymore..... the only car worth seeing at the one here was the Essence Concept.... other than that, it's all production cars that you see on the roads already.

That's not true at all. I was never all about the concept cars in the first place but I love going to auto-shows to get a chance to sit in all those cars you see every day. Its a great way to sample a whole bunch of cars in one day if you're thinking about buying soon.

50 plus 01-17-2010 11:21 PM

Neither Nissan nor Infiniti made a showing at the Tampa FL show...:shakes head:

motoextreme 01-17-2010 11:49 PM

Its not just Nissan, Ferrari didnt show at Los Angeles either. I'd wager on it just being a sign on the times, everyone is trying to cut back a bit.

Sucks...

schrute 01-18-2010 12:33 AM

^It does suck. Seeing (and sitting in) a Z34 at last year's show got me all fired up to look into Z's again (I wanted one back in HS and again when the Z33 came out but couldn't afford it at the time). It seems to me that the shows are a significant marketing tool and shouldn't be sacrificed so easily, especially since Nissan was one of the only major players absent here this year (Mercedes-Benz was the only other no-show here this year).

There are Nissan TV commercials every other commercial break it seems, it's hard to imagine that attending a car show is too expensive to justify, and we're a small market compared to some of the other cities you guys said they skipped, again it's hard for me to believe.

I hope this is temporary. I can always go to a dealer to look at a car but the show makes it so easy to see everything in a few hours, compared to a few days to see the same number of cars at the dealers.

Nissan is not attending ALL auto shows to cut down cost

Quote:

Nissan recently announced a broader initiative to cut costs in almost every single area of the company, including production and operations around the world. In addition, the Japanese automaker also confirmed it won't be attending several auto shows to take place in the next few years, including the 2010 North American International Show (NAIAS). The reason? Nissan attempts to reduce costs and investing money into a fancy display at the show doesn't make sense given the economic turmoil.

"Nissan by no means was targeting to be, or not to be, in Detroit," Nissan spokesman Scott Vazin was quoted as saying by The Detroit News. However, Vazin explained that dealerships may be allowed to participate into future regional shows but refused to provide more details on the steps they must follow.

According to the same source, Nissan will attend a single auto show in North America - in New York this April, while major events such as the ones in LA (November) and Chicago (February 2010) will be skipped. In addition, Nissan won't show up at the Frankfurt show in September but will take part at events in Shanghai, Tokyo and 2010 Geneva.

But even if Nissan plans to say "fold" to a number of shows, organizers of the North American International Auto Show express their confidence that all the other manufacturer will still attend the conference and won't follow Nissan's example.

"I don't get the feeling it will snowball. I still foresee a high degree of participation," Doug Fox, co-chair of the Detroit show, commented on according to the aforementioned source.

Nevertheless, a final decision is expected to be announced next week as further discussion will take place between Detroit auto show organizers and automakers in Geneva.

It's sad.. NAIAS is nothing like it used to be. They keep wanting to expand the convention center yet the show keeps shrinking. The best part of last year's auto show was losing my $20 at the casino afterwords.

Not True. I can't remember where I saw the article but Nissan recently listed the auto shows they will be attending this year, not many...about 4 or 5. They did cut back though...I know they were at the Tokyo Auto Salon Show this past weekend...

UNKNOWN_370 01-18-2010 01:19 PM

All I know is they need to bring back the fun stuff at the auto show again... I remember the new york naias having michael keatons batmobile and the back to the future car and stuff.I wanna see christian bales batmobile and other hot movie cars.
Another year I remember jeep rigging up dirt inclines 75 degrees steep and they made there wrangler and cherokee jeeps drive up them. Plus they made a small dirt track of boulders and dirt, then drove there vehicles on them to show how capable there 4wd systems are. That was impressive.
What was best at last years dallas auto show was this guy that had every generation Z and a GT-R. That display made me cream my pants...lol gotta check my sd card for those pics other than that, nothing outrageously creative in auto shows lately.
C/S
The last couple years nissan been saying they won't be doing any auto shows. But then I see them in the dallas auto show. Go figure.

In a lot of these cases it is dealer groups that are shouldering the cost to go into these regional shows when Nissan Corporate is a No-show..

370zdub 01-19-2010 12:47 AM

I went to the SLC auto expo and I was also disappointed to not see Nissan there. I did throw up in my mouth a little when I watched a little boy climb all the way to the top of the hoop and onto the windshield of the Corvette ZR1 that was on display..

I think I should've been more clear. When I said Nissan won't attend "ALL", I didn't mean they will not attend all car shows. They will NOT attend ALL car shows but they will go to selected car shows.

Makes sense... the show is a sourrce of pre-sales for the area dealerships. Not having there product @ the show with so many other companies there can hurt sales.

370Zsteve 01-19-2010 11:51 AM

They will be at the only one that matters, the show at the Jacob Javits Center in NYC. April 2-11, 2010. Be there.

fairladyZ34 01-19-2010 06:42 PM

they prob saw the genesis coupe there and got scared:roflpuke2::roflpuke2:

schrute 01-19-2010 09:18 PM

Haha, there was a decent looking Genesis there actually. Didn't get a pic at the show but I found one online. I've always been a sucker for good looking cars in orange, if I ever paint the Z I'll do something like this.
