Friend of mine has a MazdaSpeed3...

And he's talking about us heading to the local dragstrip come spring...

Myself, I've never been on a drag strip. He has from what I know, and has high performance cars for a while, last car was the last year Firebird.

But, assuming we're equal on the track...which would win in a 1/4 mile? I imagine the 370z would "spank" the MS3 with both in stock form (considering that mine is a 7AT, and his is a manual, which would give a bit more advantage), however, mine has G3 intakes, and will likely have a Fast Intentions full exhaust by the time we get around to hitting a track. His MS3, is currently stock...and AFAIK, I don't think he's planning on doing anything to it...

I did tell him that he might have a chance with a rolling start due to his turbo...was I way off? I honestly didn't know...

Anyhow...just curious.

$20 on the Z

blue660r01 01-01-2010 07:37 PM

Id be more worried to run him from a roll than a dig ...either way Z>MS3

theDreamer 01-01-2010 07:38 PM

Well, stock he is running 263HP at the flywheel (cannot find torque), so the Z has 69HP and unknown torque above it. Unless he screw the launch and a shift he will not win, you could probably run him in D mode and still be fine.

Doesn't that thing run just shy of a 14 second 1/4? You should murder him.

PapoZalsa 01-01-2010 07:40 PM

This thread sound familiar to one I read in another forum about the Mazda3s trying to run a Z. :argue:

I will bring my friend's civic si, I would put money on the Si over the MS3.

I figure unless I do something stupid, I should win in a 1/4 (lack of experience says I will do something stupid and lose though)

A rolling start might be another matter though.

I know with mods, I've got a much clearer advantage...I just hope I wasn't blowing smoke up the guy's rear about rolling start and him having a chance. ;)

I bet the Z finished somewhere along the lines of 7 mph faster in the 1/4 than the mazdaspeed, so I would guess even at a roll you have nothing to be concerned about.

KillerBee370 01-01-2010 07:47 PM

I don't think you would "spank" him. I'm not even sure that the 370 would pull off a win for sure against a MS3. They're fast cars. The intakes and exhaust will help you but there's more you can do to ensure your victory. The biggest thing is actually get to a track and practice some.

Zsteve 01-01-2010 07:48 PM

Man this sure sounds familar, didnt we do this thread about a month ago with the Z and MS3?

He may jump you pretty good just being familiar with the track, how the tree works and etc. However, with almost a full second faster car, I would find it hard to believe that if you can drive pretty well, you will have any issues. Especially since you're driving an auto versus his stick, where he is forced to be the better driver.

a buddy of mine had some bolt on's and a tune and he ran a 13.5 i think in his ms3 ... He said he got zero traction too.. i forget his 60 foot but it was not good at all..

they are capable of being quick... stock for stock though he really doesnt have a chance.. He may have a tune if he is confident.. or raised boost or something... but you should be okay..

I think the MS3 should be compared to cars like it, ie 4 cyl turbos. I dont look at the MS3 as even being in our classification as we are a 6 cyl 2 door sports car. Speed wise its close but we all know that a turbo car will get way more gains from its chip than a NA so I just dont see why compare it to NAs when there are loads of 4 cyl turbos out there to compare it to.

Zsteve 01-01-2010 08:21 PM

You should find out if he is chipped. If so he gained around 50 hp and 60 TQ maybe more if he did a high flow down pipe too. Still chipped should be about even.

I used to run against a GTO 6.0 in my 2.0T TT (chipped and full TBE) and he would pull about a car length ahead of me, but when he shifted my DSG 7 AT would gain back 1/2 that length. He would pull a little shift, lose alittle. I could tell by his face he didnt like my 4 cyl keeping up with his big V8. So your AT should give you an advantage like stated earlier. I feel 2nd and 3rd gear are my strongest pulls, comparable to the turbo pull I had in my 2.0T. Z FTW.

about two weeks ago, a few friends and I went to a local air strip that they usually use for drift competitions, its been abandoned for years and can be rented for special events. The strip itself is about a mile long, so its great to use for rolling 1/4miles, dig 1/4 miles etc. Some guy in a 08' STI a blue one to be exact, wanted to try a roll from 40 just to see where he stacked up, a third car drove along us with an air horn, from 40 to 120, I pulled 3-4 cars before we shut it down. No chance in hell he'd ever win from a roll in a ms3, and zero chance in hell, being that you have an auto and cant screw a shift up, will he win in a 1/4 mile, ZERO.

And just to add, he was quite upset and disappointed with his car, and made a comment about how he should have blown the money he paid for that on a SP/Touring Z. :)
