Word to the wise

I learned a valuable lesson today. If you track your oil, tire, etc. maintenance using the computer, be aware that if you replace your battery all mileage entries WILL BE DELETED. Luckily I caught mine in time, and luckily I'm running Mobil 1 full synthetic oil. I simply forgot about how far I'd gone without an oil change... which ended up being just under 18,000 miles.:icon14:

I don't use the computer to keep track maintenance items. I change my oil before every track event. That is two days of tracking and the road miles after that track session, so once a month or two at most. I change brake, transmission, clutch and rear diff fluid once a year unless there is a reason to do it sooner. The air filter gets changed or cleaned once or twice a year. Tires are once a year or when there condition dictates. I check my brake pads and clean them about every other rotation of my tires which I do after every track event.

If you are tracking your car you can't over due the maintenance. My mechanics all thank me because they know I am doing my part to keep the car reliable.

I keep a note book.

I don't track. :icon14:

18k miles? Yikes! I set my computer at 2.5k as an early warning and change it before 3k. I use mobile1 as well. I guess I'm a stickler on oil changes, but all the cars I've ever owned all had more than 200k miles by the time I've sold them. My current 2001 passport has 260k miles, and the engine purrrrrrs like a kitten.

Spooler 10-10-2018 10:02 PM

You are lucky you didn't loose the engine. I just get the free oil change stickers at Advance Auto hanging from a dispenser by the oil.

:iagree:

Great advice
Been doing it that way since my first car in 1973

I use a great little car maintenance app called MyCARFAX. I log all my maintenance for all my cars. The app sends me reminders when things become due. It also lets you know if any recalls pop up for your car. It even allows you to save receipts and pics of your maintenance.

Well up to this month, its now done I was using Nissan Service Maintenance Gold Plan, which had oil changes every 3 months.... So I will just use the book and follow it and maybe a bit more, since I track and play hard

Duc_Z09 10-11-2018 07:47 AM

Every 5k by the odometer, Mobil 1 full synthetic. No track days yet, but you bet your sweet bippy she's getting new oil before every track outing if/when it happens.

CMadison 10-11-2018 10:27 AM

When I said "track", I was referring to keeping track of maintenance, not a race track. Anyway, my engine seems fine... no apparent leaks, but the oil didn't even show in the dipstick it was so low.

It is going to burn oil from here on out. Keep a check on your oil level regularly.

vtec to vvel 10-11-2018 11:36 AM

I use a little maintenance book and also use “Trip B” as to how many miles I went since the last oil change.

Um, I don’t care what gets deleted, 18,000 miles before you thought something was wrong is, well, just wrong. The hell, dude?

Jayhovah 10-11-2018 01:51 PM

Way too many things get deleted when unplugging the battery. Non volatile memory is not that expensive, Nissan.

I would have to be in a coma for a year before my car went 18,000 miles without an oil change.

Just saying...

Exactly. I drive my Z once a week, but always check the oil level before driving and check how many miles I’ve driven while waiting for my car to warm up.

JARblue 10-12-2018 10:12 AM

Get an oil analysis done by Blackstone Labs. Driving on the same oil (even Mobil 1!) for 18,000 miles is most certainly not good for your engine.

You should be changing oil at least once every 6 months at a minimum regardless of the number of miles. If you drive the car more than 8K miles a year then you probably need to be changing the oil even more frequently than that.

How can I say this.......good intentions run amok with poor results.

Social engineering. Changing the way the masses think and act. They want you to be dependent on the state for everything. Big Gov't. Hmmmmmm socialism to me. :shakes head:

California should change it's name to the Socialist State of California.

RonRizz 10-12-2018 03:37 PM

A simple poster board on the wall in my garage keeps track of all my vehicles maintenance and mileages, and both of my Daughters as well...... I will even call them frequently to ask about their mileage, and check with the chart. So easy that way.... 18,000 miles??????????? Seriously?
You need to relinquish your man card immediately, and should be ashamed.. Lol
I even record oil types, quantities, drain plug wrench sizes, oil and air filter part numbers, ect. on the chart.. even which side of the car the plug is on, to eliminate crawling around under there searching.

Since I average just under 5K miles per year, that's the way I keep track of oil changes in my Z. Every July and December, doesn't matter the miles, I change the oil. Sometimes it almost looks as clean coming out as it went in.

The car's fine; everyone calm down. Mark one for NissanVQR & mobil 1.

That is not the norm. When we see this we normaly have the my engine is knocking with it. Ask SS_Firehawk.
I would not be surprised if it starts knocking in the future. No doubt it is going to burn oil. I will put money on that. Mobil 1 is not
that great.

Not trying to be a ****, but would you buy your car if someone ran the same oil and filter for 18,000 miles? Personally, I’d run screaming.:eekdance:

I concur. My Z gets maybe 4K miles driven a year, but still change the oil every 6 months in case there is moisture/water buildup.
