chain, i don't like timing belts.

Much obliged y'all.

timing chain

you can easily find things like this out by typing "370z timing chain" into a Google or similar search engine.

thanks, i did search the forum and found nothing. did not think about searching google, i should have known better.

hey steve, you could of made it easy, and linked him to it..lol

probably a standard double chain. is there one forward and one rear? or both in the front?

Double-chain means it's a chain with two sets of rollers, and 3 links.

Sort of like this => |=|=| <=

There would be no point to putting a single chain on the front and back of the engine - the torque differences between the front and rear of the engine (due to crankshaft/camshaft flex) would stretch the chain eventually.

you are correct about what i meant when i said double chain.

now.... this is a V-6, V. typically it is not 1 large chain that handles both halves of the motor. a lot of cars (Z32s if i remember correctly) have a chain (double chain) in the front of the motor for 3 of the cyls and another chain (double chain) in the back for the other 3 cyls.

I've not seen a design that puts a timing chain in the rear of the engine.

So, I could be wrong...I'm just saying they won't put a chain on both ends of a given crank AND camshaft, it'd not make sense to do so, and would wear out the chains faster.

just checked the service manual. it's a large chain in the front for the crank and both heads, followed by 2 smaller chains for each pair of cams.

Just to mindfųck the whole thread, the VVEL engines don't have camshafts, right? They have a set of eccentric cams for the VVEL that are adjusted by a motor. I didn't even see cam chains in an exploded view of the VVEL system. Maybe I'm missing something.

Variable Valve Event and Lift - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:

A rocker arm and two types of links close the intake-valves by transferring the rotational movement of a drive shaft with an eccentric cam to the output cam. The movement of the output cam is varied by rotating the control shaft within the DC motor and changing the fulcrums of the links. This makes a continuous adjustment of the valve lift amount possible. C-VTC and VVEL together control the valve phases and its valve events and lifts, allowing free-control of the valve timing and lift. This results in more efficient airflow through the cylinder and significantly improves responsiveness, optimizing the balance between power and environmental performance.

Looks like there are exhaust cams, but no intake.

belt it is! like I thought.

We have a traditional exhaust cam in addition to the variable system for intake.
