Oil Change Questions

I've been many searches on both this forum and Google, but couldn't find a straight answer and the threads always seem go off track pretty quickly. This isn't a conventional vs synthetic oil thread, but rather had a few quick questions.

Background: I bought my 09 approx. 3 years ago with 50k miles on and have been using synthetic blend. The past 2 years, I found a job to where it's take me 3 minutes to walk, so I just leave my car in the garage. The first year, I put a shitload of miles, but the past 2, I've put maybe 4k miles each year, and don't really drive my car. I'll still change out the oil once every 6 months even if I don't hit the 5k mark. Today, I went to go buy my usual brand of the synthetic blend, but turns out it's discontinued (?) and replaced with oil with full synthetic.

My questions are:

1. there is currently approx. 74k miles on the car. I've been using the synthetic blend (yeah i know it's prob mostly conventional) up until today. I understand that oil itself does not cause leaks, but rather worn seals, but my car does not leak whatsoever. Changing to full synthentic at 74k miles, is the car too old to go full synthetic?

2. the likelihood of an oil leak?

never..............I had a 1986 Toyota Celica with over 200K miles and never leaked so why would a newer vehicle would?:driving:

Nope, never too late. I use Pennzoil platinum or Quaker State ultimate. QSU is a "sleeper" oil and outperforms many others. You can get QSU for $20 at Walmart.

When did you guys switch? At 74k miles, this is the first time I put in full synthetic, and synthetic blend the past 3 years.

You'll be fine and just avoid your seals drying out. Anywho.....Gravitating......gravitating....ibtl.

Lol how do I keep them from drying out?

You're in FL so that'll help. It's really using it as often as you can.

To answer your one question. You should change your oil every 6 months. When oil sits after it has been run. It will form acids and other compounds that are not good for your engine as they say.

Alot of people have switched to full synthetic on high mileage vehicles with no problems.

As for seals drying out. Start the motor once a month and leave run for 30 minutes. Better yet. Go for a ride. :driving: This will keep the caliper pistons from sticking.

I switched over a Chevy 1500@200,000+ w/high mileage Mobil 1 & synthetic filter,
I have a 92’ K1500 Blazer that I switched over at nearly 300,000 + synthetic filter,
Z has had since I’ve owned (8700mi.) You can switch & then switch back to conventional/ it’s not gonna cause problems.
Now- The high mileage oils have additives that will potentially swell seals a tad to control/prevent leaks,,,So that’s the only one you don’t want to swap back & forth from.
I remember when that was rumored out about using conventional & switching to synthetic...then causing leaks because of molecules being smaller; oil being slicker,etc...
You will be fine.

As long as your car was run up to the break-in point on the original oil, what kind of oil you run afterwards should not impact the seals or anything else. Since you don't have any leaks that was obviously done. The original oil will swell up the seals and what is done is done no matter what you do after. My two cents from my 96 year old mechanic dad... lol

Hate to tell you this. From the factory. There is no longer break in oils. It's all synthetic. Vettes and Vipers come with Mobil 1. And it does not swell up the seals. ;)

I’ll drive my car about once a week just to get the oil flowing and always change the oil every 6 months, regardless of mileage. In fact, Saturday’s oil change was done with only 1400 miles lol with the last change being in April of this year.

I’ve been checking the oil level, and underneath the car and not a single oil drop on the floor :icon17:

True but we’re talking about the Z here, it doesn’t come with synthetic oil from the factory.
