Short Shifter?

1 Attachment(s)
Hello everyone, just wanted to know what brand are you guys using for short shifters? im trying to look for one for cheap and the cheapest i found costs $48 which is the one above. should i look for something better or it doesnt matter at all? thanks

JARblue 07-01-2017 04:05 AM

You get what you pay for. I picked up a used TWM short shifter for under $100 from someone on the forum :twocents:

OldFart 07-01-2017 08:28 AM

I luv it, people are willing to drop 25-30k on a car then ask what the cheapest is of a certain product they can put on their car...

I hope you know that the majority of people are financing the car right..not many people can shell out 30k on a car. If I could, trust me, you wouldn't see me on these forums

sirnixalot 07-01-2017 08:56 AM

90% chance you'll end up having to mod it or put up with some quirks or some ****.

$233 for the B&M on summit really isn't a bad deal?

Either that or you buy the $48 one and be the guinea pig.

OhioYJ 07-01-2017 08:57 AM

I looked at several shifters before picking up the TWM. You'll also notice the TWM has a bearing at the bottom whereas most of them have a bushing.

If you plan on running an aftermarket shift knob and order from TWM, you may ask them if you can get an extra one of those black pieces that's supposed to hold the boot up. It makes a very nice finishing piece on top:

http://www.cdmfabrication.com/bbpics...wmshifter4.jpg

I ended up using washers underneath to hold the boot up, but had I known I would have asked about getting an extra part from them ahead of time.

Now I am using a Voodoo shift knob. Those are reasonably priced and the correct thread. I thought the TWM shift knobs, and some of the other shift knob prices I see out there are ridiculously priced.

You won't be getting much help with an attitude like that. :stirthepot:

I looked at the B&M, and what I didn't like about this was you have to file the shifter casting. This is a part that is not sold separately by the dealer. So if you mess it up you have a problem.

I get that it's not that hard and may just be some trial and error to make sure you have just enough so reverse works, but seriously? Why are they the only one that require this?

i suggest you check out shorter weighted knobs first. ive done short shifters/bushings on previous cars so i know what benefits they offer. but the Z, nah. no need.

I also personally wouldn't go further than swapping out the shift knob. I agree that the transmission can be notchy, but honestly, I don't find it to be so horrible. I'm personally more concerned with the idea of a short shifter doing damage to our transmissions as they are clearly the weakest link in our car. Too many people having to get synchro's replaced with a stock shifter for me to contemplate a short shifter...
I do plan on changing the knob eventually to improve the shifter with weight and a shorter height on the knob itself. But honestly, it's not my primary concern.

Didn't I read that short shifters work kinda crappy on these cars?...then if you buy a crappy one thats a double crap....
Yep I did read they are crappy ...just two of many quotes above. ;)

Sounds like the words of someone with a life plan to be perpetually broke. Since a car is a depreciating asset you essentially agree to pay interest(or overpay and get zero interest) for something that is concurrently losing money. So again no thanks on mirroring the "majority".

I'd disagree, I'd say money well spent. Since day one, I've always never cared for the way the car shifted. The TWM shifted definitely helped this. I'd do it again. I think lot of people who make these claims have not tried one on the 370.

Interesting, most claim crappy ...so you have had no syncro issues and the shifts are smooth as glass? How long have you had it on your car....?

SINISTER 07-01-2017 10:15 AM

OP if you have a 2016 I am also guessing if you have warranty left and if you claim trans or clutch issues with a short shifter on...the repair cost will be all on you....dealers will find any reason. Just a thought...

Smooth as glass? No, it's not magic. Nothing will make these cars shift like that. More precise, yes. It definitely helped. I've always had/built Mustangs, which have much smoother shifting transmissions (Also helps T5 parts are easily obtainable, and easily rebuilt). The 370Z is my daily driver, I put the shifter in back in January (My car is also a 2016).

What does the shifter have to do with the clutch? I've also never really gotten the synchro argument either? Is the thought you'll be shifting so fast that you'll wear out the synchros quicker (you aren't speed shifting all the time)? Easy enough to throw the stock shifter back in if you started to have a problem. Either way both the clutch and synchros are most likely going to be consider a wear item right? Maybe I'll eat crow later on this one, but I've rebuilt a lot several manual transmission in my garage, if something happens, I'll most likely be the one fixing it anyways.

TWM ftw! I have their short shifter and their competition long knob. I have been rocking it for almost for years without any issues. I tried the heavy knob and it didn't work for me as well as the tall knob and short shifter.

Don't cheap out on parts you will f up your car and you will end up spending three times the money you were trying to save. If can't afford to do it right don't at all! Take it from a guy that has bought and re-bought thousands of dollars in parts and labor.

As far as Nissan is concerned, your shifter assembly is an integral part of your tranny. I guarantee you that if you show up to a dealer with tranny problems, your warranty will be voided if you have or have had an aftermarket shifter assembly on there.
You would be very surprised at how much the shifter assembly has to do with the transmission reliability. Believe me, I learnt this the hard way with past cars.

Agreed 100%...OhioYJ sounds like he has never had a warranty discussion with a stealership before...;)

This warranty argument is silly, why would you take the car into the dealer for transmission problems with an aftermarket shifter on it still? It takes maybe an hour to out the stock shifter back in? Put the stock shifter back in drive the car to the dealer, no big deal.

This is like the collectors who don't want to take a toy out of the box because they might harm it or ruin the value. I'm going to play with my toy and enjoy it.

Short shifters, the new oil thread

How is it silly? Its a legitimate issue that someone may need to deal with if they put it on. Why not discuss the pros and cons of ownership and not just say its awesome because your defending your purchase...

Can't argue with you here as I've never had this on my 370Z. However the quotes that SINISTER has posted from kenchan as well as Nick911sc are valid points, and should be considered before replacing the shifter.

While a little notchy, I think the Z's shifter is pretty darn good, as I also own a 17 BMW M2. Yes the one that all the car mags fawn over. And they're correct, it's an excellent car with a lot of things superior to the Z, but I'd take the Z's shifter over the M2's anytime.

HEK 07-01-2017 03:27 PM

I like the distance between gears on the Z, I had a short shifter on my Acura TL but the distance OEM was really far in between gears. I'm not sure if I would want to miss shift with a short shifter and I image the difference doesn't warrant the amount of work it takes to do so, but I guess to each their own, personally I rest my elbow on the center compartment and am able to shift with the twist of the wrist, good luck OP. :driving:

Okay, you just lost my support here. You're deliberately hiding something you did, and expecting someone else to pay for your actions. What makes this worse, is you think it's no big deal :shakes head:

ChopsZ 07-01-2017 04:38 PM

Honestly, I like the stock shifter in the Z just fine.

I've owned two very different Miata's over the years, 5 years each, a 2002 and a 1991. The shifters in those Miata's are excellent, everyone knows that too. Funny thing is, the one in the Z reminds me of that Miata shifter. It's not as short, and it's not as precise, but it's close.

I had a VooDoo knob on the 2002 and a JoyFast knob on the 1991. Just a simple flick of the wrist and you could run up and down the gears quickly and easily. The Z's shifter isn't too far off from those.

Maybe one day I'll get a shorter, weighted knob for the Z, but I can assure you one thing, it won't be a metal one again like those in the Miata's. Living down here in Florida, grabbing those knobs is the equivalent of putting your hand on a stove-top burner on high!

My only complaint with this car about smooth shifting is the darn clutch pedal. Even with the RJM pedal installed, I still don't have it dialed in right and still get jerky shifts through 1st to 3rd. :supergay:

s2krazyyy 07-02-2017 02:29 AM

I come from an S2k which is arguably one of the best shifters I have ever felt. People who say the stock shifter on the 370z is good enough have not experienced a good one i gurantee that. I have the TWM SS with a weighted knob and it is one of my best mods. I feel like people who have synchro issues on this car skip shift. Oh an OP dont cheap out in this part and do yourself a favor and get TWM.

Sway 07-02-2017 11:20 AM

I have twm and couldn't be happier. No issues after about 2 years

redondoaveb 07-11-2017 05:38 PM

I just had my TWM short shifter installed and I love it. Yep, it's notchy but I love the notchy mechanical feel. It feels more like what a sports car should feel like (imo).

flyfish 07-11-2017 08:38 PM

I have the TWM short shifter as well as their Big Type R knob in graphite (matches interior perfectly btw), paired with a set of Z1 MTEC shifter springs. Short throws, crisper engagement and with the springs, a more mechanical feel. Darn close to Miata (14 year owner) like, but what is?

nis350 07-11-2017 11:02 PM

Yes.. the Z's shift action is fine, but it is not like the Miata.

With the proper transmission fluid, the Z can be quite smooth.
