What MPH gets the best MPG?
As 0 mph gives 0 mpg...
100 mph gives terrible mpg... At what speed should cruise control be set to get the best mileage out of the Z? I set cruise @ 80 this weekend and got 23.0 mpg over 300 miles. Whacha got? |
Well, technically, the lowest rpm at the fastest speed...
Ok, I'll reword it, that looks funny. 6th gear has the lowest ratio, so, whatever rpm is just above where the motor lugs. Probably somewhere in the neighborhood or 45 mph. That sucks, don't it? Oh, you wanted to know about useful speeds!!?! If you will set your cruise control about 65, and don't touch the gas or brakes, you would probably be amazed at the milage you would get, but where's the fun in that? While I do track my milage, mainly because I'm ocd that way, I don't worry too much about the actual numbers, as long as they stay pretty consistent. A number uot of the normal range could indicate a problem that needs attention. Oh, and I got over 26 on my 300 mile maiden voyage back from San Antonio. :driving Kirk B. |
Probably 1800-2000 rpm in top gear. I'd bet it's right at 55mph.
|
Traditionally, the best mileage is always around 45 mph.
|
Can't say I've ever considered or thought about getting the best mileage in the Z.
|
You should be able to get close with the fuel usage gauge. May need to use your foot to keep throttle steady while taking readings.
It will vary with temp, humidity, road surface, etc. It probably won't be the same for a stock setup and one with mods. FWIW, on the rolling hills of S AR, I can get over 2 MPG better than cruise using my foot. |
I have a several mile long spot on my drive to/from work over a dam; and that's straight, flat, unused, and 45mph. The Z will show like 28mpg average over that distance if I stay at 45mph, which is the best I ever see out of it.
Otherwise, yeah, putting MPG meters and estimators in the Z had to be someone's idea of funny. :D |

Cruising a nice steady 165 in 6th

City I get a little over 300 miles per tank, highway I get a little over 400 per tank, I drive aggressive mind you... city or highway, but when cruising highway I try to keep it at 80 mph. Lately I have been finding myself going over 80 though...I am seriously considering a radar detector...not so much concerned about gas mileage as I am with speeding tickets..the Z just makes me want to drive fast as I believe it was meant to be

With the Z's aerodynamics I'd say the optimum is a bit higher than in regular cars. I'd say 55-60 mph. But that's just my feeling after a few longer trips. Never actually compared the numbers. |

Care to check that math again? Using fuel (car running) while not moving, will eventually empty your tank. Giving Zero miles for your gallons. :iagree: |

You've never noticed the MPG gauge doesn't hit every 0.1 - It sorta skips by 0.3's Oh, and I get 6.7 mpg at the race track :driving: Don't get all serious on me ;) |
Over the 18000 or so miles I've driven the Z, my overall average is 24.505 MPG. I've had a high of 28.8 on the way home from ZdayZ this year while averaging 60 MPH...on the track about 10 :)

Buys sport car. Wants to maximize mileage? Uh I swore the goal was highest fuel consumption. Damn
|
Flat driving behind a bunch of farm trucks at a steady 60 mph in 6th gear got me over 30 mpgs for about a 150 mile stretch. It was agonizing ... gas mileage while driving a Z should be half that

Don't worry, it's just a question. I don't drive based on MPG :tiphat: |
I got 33 mpg once going about 50-55 mph for 60 miles. I learned how to hypermile by driving a Prius for long distances before, so it's all about how you drive really.

Plus I'm already paying an arm and leg for gas in canuckistan |
I read somewhere that traveling around 55 MPH at the highest gear yields the best MPG. Seems correct for the Z by looking at peoples comments.

55 in 6th gear, while drafting behind a semi-truck... Oh, don't forget to turn off the AC and keep the windows up. I bet we can hit 35 mpg lmao

I drive mildly aggressive and have only managed a best of 230 mile a tank. |

Then again, maybe I'm too old to care:icon17: |
Man ole man. I drive whatever speed puts a smile on my face. MPG, who cares. I just did a 900 mile trip down to Tampa, Fl and back for work. The back roads and small towns were driving me crazy until I got to the interstate.
|
When I drive to my Brother's house, 220 miles each way, I get there and back on one tank, with four dots left on the fuel gage. Done it many times. I try to cruise at 75 mph. I've checked a couple of times when I filled my tank (after 440 miles) and both times was just over 29 mpg.
|
I use to get 28,29 cruising@2500rpm's 75mph;
after adding the much wider wheels/tires...25,26 highway & 22-23 to & from work. |
26-28 sounds about right for me on a 75 cruise control if i dont have to touch the brakes or gas for a bit. If im actually driving with traffic 20 is about avg

I bet if I were to make the same commute every day, I'd barely break 250 a tank. |
I think the key here is like they say...your mileage will very. Frankly as sports cars car the Z is fairly economical fuel wise. But as some have stated they can hit single digits. Nice that it will achieve high 20's as well! And remember that here in Canada our gallon is bigger so we get higher mileage.he he.

Our way with L/100km would give you the total opposite. |
I averaged 29.8 mpg over a 200 mile trip yesterday. I think my average speed was around 74 mph. I usually get 18 mpg during my daily commute.

Just got back from driving from Cincinnati to Ocala, Fl (est. 850 miles). On the way down I hit a lot of rain which lowered my average mph, but I was able to get 30+ mpg! The picture shows my Average MPG and MPH from my home (about 25 miles north of Cincy) to Atlanta (490 miles). I got a heavier foot after Atlanta and I ended up with about 27mpg for the overall trip down. Since it rained even more during my trip back up I didn't pay attention to my Mpg during my return.
This shows if you take it easy and drive "normal" the Z is capable of getting excellent fuel economy. https://s17.postimg.org/5gao3nq3v/IMAG0553.jpg |
Never consider MPG in a sports car. If I was concerned about that I probably wouldn't have a Z. My Acura TL gets fair mileage and my Mountaineer (family truckster) with a 4.5 liter V8 gets even less mileage than the Z. When I saw the topic I thought I had accidentally accessed a Toyota Prius forum :)
