Engine Note:Do I Have A Problem?

I've only driven my new 370 base A7 twice---once when I brought her home and then, a few days after. I noticed that when the car is cold (even though garaged) and I started her, the exhaust "growl" seems very loud. It quiets down after a minute or so and is just right thereafter. I'm just concerned about the loudness, though, during that first minute or two of warm-up. If this is normal, I have no objection to it. I just want to be sure that it's not a symtom of some kind of a muffler or exhaust problem.

wishihadnav 12-09-2009 02:56 PM

its normal.

vipor 12-09-2009 02:56 PM

the ECM ups your idle to help it get things moving when you first start. like a choke on a carb. 2k rpm is a resonating sob in these cars. typically i'll see 1.5-1.6k upon first starting.

normal, enjoy it :D

EDIT: lol first 2 replies are PW Nismos

GTRFAN 12-09-2009 06:56 PM

I actually like the startup rasp. It's just noisy till the oil pumps around.

I think it sounds nice, too. Especially with aftermarket exhaust.

Can't drive a beautiful new Z here in PA these says. Too much salt, cinders and ice on these roads. Got a nice Altima coupe to get me through winter.

dad 12-10-2009 02:20 PM

I checked the weather report for your area, cold, real cold. I would do the same and drive the Altima. Plus you have more snow coming tonight.:santasleigh2:

GT Motoring 12-10-2009 03:16 PM

This cold is brutal!

Edit: Dude.... why did you change it? Now my post does not make any sense. :(

OldGuy 12-10-2009 04:27 PM

Yep. Z is nice and warm and clean and safe in the garage. I rest easy...

smashbar 12-11-2009 07:53 AM

Having only driven my car 3 times since purchase, I too have been wondering if the rather loud initial exhaust rasp was a normal thing... or if there was some issue there. Glad to hear that it's normal!

vipor 12-11-2009 08:14 AM

must be used to cars where the motor is louder than the exhaust

coming from someone in Chitown, that is a serious statement.

Red370 12-11-2009 09:39 AM

ha, it snowed 1 inch here about two weeks ago and the locals were saying hail marys and getting baptised:rofl2:

not to mention there were about 30 severe car accidents

i'm originally from Ohio, so I find it rather amusing.

Hah. Im from Buffalo originally, so trust me - I know the feeling completely. I get a chuckle every time I see a "severe weather alert" go out for 1-3" of snow.

OldGuy 12-11-2009 07:09 PM

Nice to have a forum like this to check things out. Enjoy.
