Toyota clone or just a guess?

While looking at car mags at the pharmacy yesterday, I saw a red 370Z on the cover of Car & Driver, or Road and Track. I took a closer look and it was a Toyota. Yes, I've heard the rumors about the reintroduction of the Supra. But what caught my attention was that the model depicted on the cover was almost a clone of the 370Z. Is that what will look like for sure or a guess by the car mags? Looks like we have some competition.

Was one of them a cover talking about drifting? The picture is a 370z Nismo and then a few pages in they start talking about the concept cars that will launch in the next 12 months, one of which is the new Toyota 4 cylinder/RWD/2+2 seater. The Toyota looks like a lot of cars from different angles, borrows design cues from others.

Its the FT-86...its supposed to be a remake of the famous AE-86 from the anime Inital D. Its also the only RWD corolla. Supra would be great, but IMO they prob considering the LFA their "supra".

it's not just because of anime :rofl2:

i loved the little AE86 long before i ever got into japanese cartoons

the FT-86 is supposed to be a pretty mature design exterior-wise, but the interior is still a bit star trek-y.

yeah but i'm too young to remember see one in person :bowrofl: soo the anime was my first reference. Plus I've owned a couple of Best Motoring International where they had the AE86 in some touge battles.

Mebbe come here as a Lexus? Corolla? Really? Bad name for a cool car!

Mike 12-03-2009 08:30 PM

Motor Trend says it may come here as a Celica. Head of Toyota, Mr Toyoda, said that it will be the best drift car, and that it was designed specifically for that purpose.

RCZ 12-03-2009 08:40 PM

Looks like a shortish wheel base...not ideal for drifting :(

TipsZ 12-03-2009 08:51 PM

Looks more Mazda based lines than Z lines though. Interesting that Toyota is wanting to jump back into the game.... remember, competition brings out the best in all who compete .. so this may not be a bad thing.

kenchan 12-03-2009 10:09 PM

they should just call it a levin

I had a notch back hachi roku (AE86) at one time. Great little car.

The new one is supposed to be powered by a Subaru boxer engine, they've been calling it a Toyobaru. Toyota owns a stake in Fuji Heavy Industry. I hope they don't use what's in the current STI, I hear they are so sensitive & weak in the piston they blow up if you just look at it wrong...

A good friend told me at at a recent track day (of mosly industry guys) 2 with just cat back's went home on flat beds with block damage. Yikes.

the roof lines look straight stolen from the 370z which was properly stolen from the GTR hehe.

I like the car but i don't like that i some how see big resemblance in my 370z.

That is what I was looking at, thanks. From the side view, it does look like a Z clone

I'm sure its longer than the 100inch wheelbase on the Z and the Z seems to do pretty nice on the drift.

phelan 12-04-2009 11:20 AM

c'mon the original ae86 had sub-100 inch wheelbase, and look at that thing go!
