After 3 Months of ownership, RIP Z

12/10/16
Day started with a plan on doing my first coilover install with a buddy and my pops.
We started at 10am. After a couple of breaks and needing to buy bolts and nuts,
6 hours later we were finished with adjusting and wanted to take the Z out for a ride to see how the new suspension felt.

At 4:25Pm the accident occurred.

Not even 2-3 minutes after the install.
I was stopped at a redlight with my buddy to turn left (yes it is a protected left turn). The turn left signal turn green and this old lady went and proceeded to run the red light, which in turn hit my car at about 20MPH.

I didn't even get to take a picture of how my car looked with the coils installed...

I'm still in shock. This is my first accident, And being 19Y/O This was my first car purchase ever.

I had a passenger and we are both banged up, passenger Side airbags were deployed.
back pain for both of us, Passenger Arm is numb and has a little blood from the airbag being deployed.

Hopefully it doesn't take to long to get updates to see if the car is repairable or not.

From the picture I will post below, Looks like the Axle is broken, Rear bumper is trashed, Fender is trashed, Rim is done, Tire is done, Air bags will need to be replaced.

If any of you fellow forums members have been in a situation like this, Would you consider my car a Total loss? or Salvageable?

Thanks, Drive safe out there.

But here is a picture of how the damage looked.

Holey crap. Glad you are OK.

Zat_Zuma 12-11-2016 12:56 PM

Didn't see her coming? At 20 mph you could watch it happen in slow motion.
As in crossing the street, look both ways before crossing.
Defensive driving 101

Sorry for your loss

Did not see her until it was to late, I tried to press the gas to avoid her, If I didn't step on the gas more my passenger would have probably been hit head on.

Fuzzzy 12-11-2016 01:21 PM

Damn. Bummer. Glad it wasn't worse than it was. Good luck getting everything sorted out.

Trips 12-11-2016 01:26 PM

First off good to hear you or passenger weren't hurt. :tiphat:

The Z is repairable from what I can see, But you need to first see what the insurance adjuster claims finds before claiming it a total loss. :ugh2:

Good Luck!

kenchan 12-11-2016 01:32 PM

dat really sucks.

Nizmo.Man 12-11-2016 01:55 PM

Ouch :( I definitely feel your pain bud. Got rear ended by a guy going around 30-40 and shock is an understatement especially for being in accident for the first time. From what I understand, when more than one airbag is deployed the car is deemed a total loss by the insurance. I'm guessing they'll give you a rental until they give you a paycheck for it or buy you a replacement. I would definitely ask/mention it to them that the coilovers are aftermarket and may let you put the stock ones back on as aftermarket parts are not included in the insurance coverage unless you specify it when purchasing insurance. Best of luck to you bro!

Z-Girl 12 12-11-2016 01:56 PM

Totally sucks...Glad you both are ok!

Glad you and your passenger weren't injured, but sorry about your Z. Keep your chin up.

ssmoked 12-11-2016 03:00 PM

Cars can be replaced, good thing you and passenger are not too banged up.
Given you have a 2010, deployed airbag, extensive damage, your car is totaled. How much payout you are able to negotiate depends on your skills. Might want to hire a lawyer for future medical settlements too

BboyZ 12-11-2016 03:06 PM

Glad you and the passenger are in good shape..

Not how it works, but try to save all the aftermarket as you can if possible. Like the rims, looks from the picture, front rim are good. So means you only have to buy the rear.

Here in Cedar Rapids, when the light goes green, I look both ways not to see if anyone is running the red light, but to see how many. Glad you are OK. The Z can be fixed or replaced. You and your friend can't be.

solidus 12-11-2016 04:52 PM

Good you're ok. December 18th last year a woman pulled out in front of me and totalled my Tundra. Your car does'nt look bad but I'd want it totalled for a couple reasons. If they don't total it'll be on carfax as an accident car but if you have it for the sheer joy of the car then it could be an aftermarket opportunity. As in Nismo bumpers , Sparco/Recaro seats as replacements, new wheels the whole shebang. If they do total it that's another opportunity to buy it back and salvage it or part it. Either way I'd be keeping that bastard. Geico cut me a check shortly after I was out of the hospital ( My femur was broken in my crash. ). There's a time limit they should adhere to for payout.

MagmaRed370z 12-11-2016 06:26 PM

It can go both ways. Depends on the adjuster. Glad you both are OK

Jimbo370 12-11-2016 08:57 PM

Praise the Lord you get to see another day. Sorry about the situation. I was hit in ranger truck and had to punch the accelerator so the car hit the bed or it could have been worse( driver door).Be careful and drive like everyone is after you defensive.:driving:

That is exactly what I had to do. My passenger later pointed it out to me later when we got our breath back.

axmea? 12-11-2016 11:10 PM

Glad you are ok. Us.....waiting for the parts announcement. lol.

Been there, done that sad to say. I know what it's like to have your Z destroyed in an accident.

But you and your friend are OK and that's the main thing. Your next Z will be even better.

Keep you head up, hope your recovery is a speedy and complete one, and good luck to you!:driving:

Magic Bus 12-12-2016 02:38 PM

Many years ago as a young man, similar to you, I had an elderly man run a light into my 280Z and totaled it. Being my first accident and a car I really prized, I understand how nerve wracking this must be for you.

I wish you and your passenger a speedy recovery from your back injuries and hope the insurance companies compensate you fairly. Good luck and just remember, the Z is replaceable but you and your friend are not.

VQZ34 12-12-2016 04:15 PM

Get well soon and buy another z!

That sucks bro, but like everyone else said cars can be replaced people can't be. I'm glad y'all are both alright.

Hopefully her insurance doesn't try to screw around.

jaedub 12-12-2016 06:07 PM

Damn, sucks to see this happen but it could have been worse. Just imagine if she was traveling 40+ mph. I'm glad you and your passenger is OK.

I highly doubt your Z is totaled. Fix her up again and get it back on the road. Make sure you claim depreciation if this accident drops the value of your car.

GL with repairs!

Cars come and go, but glad you didn't get damaged yourself.

The pics are garbage, but it doesn't look all that bad to me.

Ventruck 12-14-2016 12:39 AM

Don't have anything different to add, but I feel for you in terms of frustration. #1 is both of you are on your feet still, the car can be replaced one way or another, but the burden of the process....just keep your head up and stay focused on doing everything right vs. being in a rush to get back on track.

UPDATE 12/22/16
Car has been determined as Totaled.

Adjuster quoted 14k in damages to the car.

Hoping to get into another 370z in the near future, My parents really want me to get a Sedan, but it is my money so Ill spend it how I want to. but if I do end up going the sedan route looking at a G37 so i'll still be in the VQ life.

Sucks but I guess expected.

I'd give time on the decision. I mean if it's your daily driver, there's big factors to revisit. As much as I knew what I had coming, knowing doesn't exactly help the situation of having the Z as a daily driver.

My only gripe about the G37 is that it's comparably way more common than the Z. That's an allure that's hard to get past.

axmea? 12-23-2016 02:02 AM

I have a G. The g37 will not drive and handle as well as the Z and the interior isn't really good. But it's your money.

kenchan 12-23-2016 05:08 AM

Sorry to hear. Why a sedan? Only car get a hatch. GL!

Z-Girl 12 12-23-2016 07:37 AM

I came from the G sedan. Not the same excitement. But I do miss the room and backseat!

Marviee 12-23-2016 08:31 AM

I'm also trying to look for a nismo but in norcal it's hard to find one where the price isn't marked up so much.

kenchan 12-23-2016 09:00 AM

There is a new red nismo sitting at the dealership in my town. You buy it and I'll be happy to drive it out to you...:happydance::
