RX8 CF to the max

I had a carbon fibered out RX8 pass me yesterday, basically a ricer fly by. He had a CF wing, trunk , hood and some exhaust work. Sounded like 2 fart cans more than a CBE or anything. Well I passed him in normal driving and in my rear view mirror I saw him punch it to catch up, of course I wouldnt let him and puled on him some till I quit. So he zooms by me again and as he does I see fire from his left exhaust tip for a couple of secs. I guess he needs to tune the car or something as I guess he was running rich and the hot pipes ignited the funes. It was funny cuz he wouldnt look at me, I guess he was mad all his light CF did nothing for him against a Z. But is the car running rich what caused the fire from the tip?

RX8's suck

I made the mistake of buying one, I kept it about 4 months, it was a decent car but it's such a disappointment from a power standpoint

I got rid of it for a 350Z, my original choice until the dealer practically gave me the RX8

Rotaries are pretty notorious for running rich. It's more common than you think.

A redneck in a pickup wanted to drag race me the other day.

Wish they would stay on their side of the world and leave us alone.

Mazda should just make the furai a production car and end it there with the rotary....Rx-8 is cool and all for being the best handling car and being a rotary.....but power sucks (should have thrown in a 20b) and MPG is horrible. Tehy said that a new 16x engine will be more fuel effecient and make more power...we will see when ever they come out...

Actually it is kinda funny "feature" on the Rx8's. When they are ran to high revs they tend to go rich and can make flames out the CBE pipes... Makes you feel you have a BatMobile.
I had 2 RX8s (2004&05) and they both did this.
ps. Only modified Rx8s can have that feature...

Its ridiculous. My 93 rx7tt ran 255hp with 222lbs of torque stock. I believe the manuals did the quarter 13.7 stock. They cancell the car and come back with 232hp and I believe 161 lbs tq??? And there reason is they said they pulled the RX7 cuz americans complained it wasn't as smooth as the 86-92 model.
If americans were complaining? Why does it still cost 20k to buy a 93-96 mazda rx7.
The 93-96 bodystyle is still timelessly beautiful. They shoulda kept that style with a few modern updates. I remember driving my rx7 @ night thru grenwich village. Gurls thought it was a ferrari. :) That car I loved like crazy. I wish I never sold it. :(

:iagree: the '93 RX7 was drop-dead gorgeous. One of my all-time favorite cars. Too bad no one could figure out how to tune the sequential turbos.

I owned an RX8 before the Z. Fantastic handling car, fingertip control, exceptionally well balanced on winding Connecticut back roads. But I had continuing cold-start problems in winter, and gas mileage was SUV-horrible.

The Z is such a rush of power after that car. I love it! But I sometimes miss the telepathic steering of the RX8 on a descending series of switchbacks and a narrow road.

I had the pleasure of being in one when it was totaled. That piece of **** crumpled like it was tissue paper, luckily everyone was ok, minus a concussion or two.

I have an RX-8 and I love it except for the gas mileage. A little over a year ago I switched jobs, making my commute much longer. Now that Im in the market for another car I love the 8 enough to get another but with the gas mileage I just don't think I can justify it anymore. Almost all highway driving and I only get around 20mpg. I know the rotary is inefficient but I just can't accept that mpg anymore and it's killing my wallet besides. I'm pretty sure Ill end up in a 370 or maybe a used Nismo 350 if I can find one. From what I gather on here people that do mostly highway driving can average close to 30 with the benefit of a lot more power and torque compared to the 8.

As someone mentioned they are working on another rotary, supposedly with considerably better HP, torque, and mpg but I believe its targeted appearance in a new car for the 2012 model year has been pushed back again. Apparently, one of the problems has been trying to direct inject the rotary to help with mpg. I guess it's no easy task when Mazda is completely alone with the rotary.

They run very rich. Thats the only way they can get 200+ hp out of an engine that small and certainly part of the reason for the piss poor mpg.

KillerBee370 12-04-2009 09:58 PM

It's probably nothing more than running straight pipes?? No cat = flames (sometimes)

FricFrac 12-04-2009 11:58 PM

I can't believe they stopped turbo charging the 13b, etc. That motor would scream but the current version NA is almost useless - too bad with such a well handling car....

^^^Mazda probably doesn't want the reliability problems the old twin turbos had. I also read somewhere that with today's emission standards it is just not doable with the 13b.

GingaBreadMan 12-05-2009 05:38 PM

My friend has a turbo'd 94 Rx7 running meth that also shoots flames. When we're running I make sure I don't tailgate lol
