funny thing is, the OPPOSITE happened to me once =p. i'm on the freeway in my subaru forester and what comes to tailgate me? a bike using his high beams on me the whole time. i was on the farthest left lane, but i wasn't going slow by any means 140 km/h, which is what im guessing around 80-85 mph? now on a road with a bunch of traffic thats not bad.

but anyways i didnt do the anything slow down (didnt feel like being an *** with him), speed up. but then when a space opened up on the right he gunned it past me and flipped me off.

anyways if i hit the brakes, theres no way his 2 wheels could have stopped him in time given the amount of space in between us.

A salute to Australia. Would that it were true here. One reason I gave up my bike was so many people seemed to be trying to kill me. I can't believe the difference between driving the 2006 Pathfinder I traded on the Z. People pull out in front of me, most often women on cell phones even though they are staring right at me. At four way stop signs, even when I am clearly first, I often let the other guy/gal go otherwise they go anyway. This morning a woman in a white SUV was waiting to pull onto a main road. In front of me was another white SUV. She waited for him to pass. The distance between the SUV waiting to pull out and the SUV she did not pull out in front of was the same. I was already prepared. Even though I was going faster than the SUV in front of me and my car is red, sure enough, she paused, and then pulled out in front of me. So typical.

They just act on impulse all the time, as if tailgating is going to get you somewhere faster -- an especially funny assumption when the car in front of you is stopped or in heavy traffic.
/rant off

E-brake did save the day in that latter case if my memory serves me correct. You do feel like a noob doing it, but sometimes the risk just isn't worth the aggravation, you know?

Really?... emergency brake. It's that big stick next to you that's not your shifter. Just pull up!

I dont get the point of trying to race someone or not let them pass you. even if someone is a total **** and tailgating you, what are you really proving by slowing down more, or racing them. Its just dangerous. If they are going to ride your ***, let them pass, and diffuse an unsafe situation, would'nt you rather NOT get rear ended then prove that your car is faster or that you're **** is bigger. You should always leave yourself an exit to any emergency situation while driving, and i'd say being able to stop/slow down quickly if you need to can certainly prevent an accident. Yes, it is THEIR fault and they are invading YOUR space when they tailgate you, but who cares? let them pass

i prefer to let them pass and watch them weave in and out for miles, then be in the same place as them 15 mins later.

and although tailgaters are very dangerous, its also dangerous not to let people pass if you are in the fast/passing lane. even if you are going above the speed limit. I hate getting stuck behind someone who's logic is 'i'm going fast enough.... i dont need to let him pass'
