AT guys, what RPM do U downshift

Im using paddles more, usually downshifting to save brakes.
what RPM are U downshifting to next lower gear...2500-3000K seems like a sweet spot for me so as to not overrev engine...I never downshift lower than 3rd gear.
what are your thoughts.

kenchan 09-20-2016 05:22 PM

5k+ as needed down to 2nd gear. but dis is on my DSG.. i let the car decide when to downshift into 1st.

This is pretty much how I also handle my AT, Shifters when I'm feeling spirited and auto when I feel like being a lazy American

Chan Chee Hoe 09-20-2016 06:12 PM

I exited the Highway using the paddle....100km/h,from 7th gear dropped until 3 rd gear...

That is a good idea, the transmission is a lot cheaper to replace then the breaks.

Down shift into 2nd and 1st and you will hear how awesome the rev match sounds. Don't worry about doing any damage to the car by down shifting into 2nd or 1st. The car won't down shift into a gear if the RPM's are too high. You will hear beep if that happens.

Billibob22 09-20-2016 07:15 PM

Use the brakes :-)

barncobob 09-20-2016 08:37 PM

im always under warranty, trade into something else newer, cheaper than fixing an old POS...been there done that...retirement affords me this option.

Lemkey99 09-20-2016 09:10 PM

Try downshifting from 3rd to 2nd sometime while at about 2500-3k rpm. The sound which comes from your exhaust is sweet, especially if you have an after market exhaust. Rarely ever downshift into first.

I've been exclusively driving in manual mode and it's 10x more enjoyable than in auto mode.

Lemkey99 09-20-2016 09:14 PM

Getting my Stillen Gen3's installed tomorrow so looking forward to see how it feels/sounds different with those paired with my Invidia CBE

This all day long. The downshift into 2nd is the best. Love the Rev matching sound coupled with the exhaust note

Lemkey99 09-20-2016 09:19 PM

My base model didn't come with the paddle shifters so I use the standard gear shifters which I prefer over the paddles. One hand on the wheel and the other on the gear shift feels more natural

jchammond 09-20-2016 09:35 PM

idk,,,mainly just upshifting w/3.357:1 axle
1-2@35
2-3@55
3-4@85
4-5@125
5-6@,,,,,,can i say (18*)

old guy 09-21-2016 07:09 AM

I very rarely down shift w/ my auto, ( let the trans do it ) up shift only.

JARblue 09-21-2016 09:25 AM

I usually downshift above 5K RPMS. Gotta hit that money shift :eekdance:

ChopsZ 09-21-2016 10:12 AM

When I got my Z, I got the proper Z... You know, the one with a 6-speed manual transmission and without that useless syncro rev-match. With 25+ years driving experience, my brain knows when to tell my right foot to apply enough throttle for a proper rev-match when downshifting.

And there's no "set" rpm to downshift into. It all depends on the situation. Likewise for which gear you need to drop into. Just because you're in 5th gear doesn't exactly mean you have to or need to drop into 4th next. Sometimes, you have to go right into 3rd or maybe even 2nd straight from 5th (emergency situations). Try doing that with a lousy automatic transmission.

Again... Many years driving experience with a proper transmission.

This thread is about the 7AT tranny so your useless remarks are not needed. GTFO

Watch yourself there, noobie...

Besides, I know exactly what this thread is about. Your post is useless, not mine. If... IF you could take anything from what I said other than just getting pissy, you'd figure out that the same rules apply no matter what transmission is used.

So please, take your own advise and :gtfo2:

Automatic transmissions (even those with paddles) are for the lazy, imho. Some people love them though, so I won't knock them. However, for me, an automatic transmission of any kind really kills the driving experience. Specifically, my experience tracking a 458 Italia was ruined by the paddles. Why Ferrari would axe the beautiful gated shifter is beyond my comprehension. According to Ferrari, it's purely for numbers, but perhaps those wealthy enough to buy them new are dumb enough to shy away from manual transmissions.

Anyway, in response to your post, I try not to let the RPMs spike above 5000 on downshifts, unless I really need every pony.

ANMVQ 09-21-2016 12:48 PM

usually around 3k, but I downshift all the way to 1st also. I NEVER drive my car in anything other than manual. :)

Also never been in 7th LOL

jameZ_10 09-21-2016 02:28 PM

3-4000

I think I almost money shifted... meant to go to 5th but I'm a noob and went to 3rd.... err oops

MagmaRed370z 09-21-2016 03:02 PM

Downshifts at 3K is the sweet spot. The sound is amazing, specially if you have aftermarket exhaust.

My 'lousy automatic' will do that, and faster then you manually can. :yum:
Properly slower and less efficient than available technology.* :driving:

But anyways, OP. It all depends on how you're driving. 'Sweet spot' for sound is probably 3,500. 'Sweet spot' for MPG is probably around 1,500. And 'Sweet spot' for tracking is probably around 4,000.

Jsolo 09-21-2016 04:50 PM

I'm at a point in my life where deciding whether the next car will have 3 pedals or 2 is a true dilemma. The 3 pedal version is more exciting to drive, but the 2 is more practical.

Anyways, as indicated above, depends on the situation. Usually I won't downshift lower than 3rd or 2nd when approaching a stop. Otherwise, depends on the corner, incline, etc.

AAAANNNNDDDD... In every day driving, how fast someone or something shifts has absolutely no bearing on anything.

Also... Typically, automatics are less efficient when it comes to true whp numbers if you want to argue that point as well.

KN21283 09-21-2016 05:26 PM

Why does it always have to turn into an auto vs manual thread?

Then again this thread was pretty much asking for it.

To each their own.

It has direct bearing on 'emergency situations' as you started your argument with. Now you're contradicting yourself.

Yabrokak 09-22-2016 02:10 PM

I usually downshift at around 3k if I want it to sound neat (currently have short tails installed). Not usually above that because I don't really have a need to nor am I ever going that fast in my usual DD traffic. Usually only do 5>4 and 4>3 downshifts. Don't usually mess with 2nd and never 1st.

I can say, however, that I wish upshifts were as fast and crisp as the downshifts.
