Shift knob

Plan on putting a different shift knob on my car as soon as in comes in the mail. tried unscrewing mine just to see if it would come off no cigar. How the heck do you get these suckers off. Hell on my 350z it spun right off.

Also Tried removing the front nissan badge to replace it with a blacked out one with two sided tape. seems like the stock one is bolted on. Is it? what about the rear badge is it stuck on with tape are bolted on? Thankz a bunch This info will save me alot of headache.

Front badge is just tape.

Shift knob is a bitch apparently. Entire tube of thread locker on every one. People use all sorts of wrenches for leverage. Just make sure you protect your interior.

You'll need 3 things.

1x: electrical tape
1x: gaffers/duct tape
1x: pipe wrench the size to bludgeon Andre the Giant with

Wrap enough electrical tape on the shift knob to about the size of a grapefruit. About half a roll. Hell, full roll. Screw it. it's cheap.

Next, wrap the gaffers tape over the duct tape. Wrap until it's the size of a human head. (i'm exaggerating but you get the idea)

Take the pipe wrench and twist that bastard until it feels like the car will turn before the knob does. Remove all the tape and you have a stock knob that hasn't been chewed alive. Enjoy.

^ I agree, BUT you should hold the bottom portion of the shifter to hold it straight so you don't do any damage to the shifter/tranny

It's what needs to be done if you don't want to mar or shred the OEM knob. I did it last year. Just go crazy with e-tape and gaffers tape. You won't damage anything. When you think you have enough tape on, add even more. My pipe wrench ate through a solid 1-2inches when twisting the sucker off.

A strap wrench from home depot will work fine, use some man muscle on it. Drop your shiftboot and hold the shifter steady with something else.

i broke two strap wrenches before giving up (well, store clerk wasnt too happy i came back for a free replacement within an hr :ugh:) and used my oil filter wrench.

Nixin 04-04-2016 03:15 PM

This is exactly why I have been putting off changing the oem shifter knob.

It's not bolted on. It has some kind of adhesive to it. All you need to do is use a heat gun or your girlfriend's/wife hair dryer and apply heat to the emblem. Once the emblem is heat it up good, you can use a flat head and pry out the badge. Just be careful with your paint. I would recommend using a small rag behind the flat head while taking it out. After you remove the emblem, remove all the adhesive that is still on car. Then you can install your new emblem just make sure the area is cleaned well so the new badge will stick. Everything is the same for the back.

I made sure to protect the shift knob and used a strap wrench....leather on the knob ended up ripping and my oem knob was destroyed. Lol

Duc_Z09 04-05-2016 02:28 PM

I just twisted mine right off. It took some muscle, but it went. Spend some more time at the gym you sissies!:stirthepot:

TNHawk 04-06-2016 04:13 PM

For the badges use heat like tonyl001 mentioned but instead of a screwdriver I used dental floss in a sawing motion to remove the emblems. However, this was on my old Sentra Spec V.

iJDMTOY 04-08-2016 12:10 PM

you might need to use a strap wrench to remove the shift knob.
