Question on pollen and wax for a new 370Z

Hi All,

First post. I bought a 1990 300ZX back in October 1989 (first new car) and had it for 24 years. It was still like new and recently sold it (bought a new Prius 3, don't ask) and then had a bad case of sellers remorse. I sold the Prius and bought a new 2016 370Z touring edition and picked it up Christmas eve :) Sellers remorse now gone!

Question, I live in Florida and even though the car is garaged it is getting a good dose of pollen on it. Can this hurt the finish? Also, I used to clean and wax my 300ZX with Zymol products. The sales person said I do not need to wax this car due to a special finish. Is that true? What is the best cleaning products to use. I thought Zymol was the best.

Thanks,
Mike

That's the most ridiculous statement from a dealer. I would ask him to elaborate on this 'special finish' just to see how stupid he really was....

You should follow a regular wash and wax regimen as it seems you already know from the time you spent with your 300ZX. There are lots of good products out there to use, Zymol being one of them.

Welcome to the forum!

The rule-of-thumb that I follow is to not use products that you can buy at AutoZone. Most contain very little wax and in some cases can actually damage the paint. I have first hand experience with that.
Check out some of the videos from one of our sponsors, Adam's Polishes. They have a lot of really good stuff and a lot of very helpful videos.

Welcome back to the Z!

Oh yeah, and your salesman is a doofus. "Special finish". I wish people would not say anything if they really don't know instead of trying to flower up the car to make a sale.

search junkman2000 on youtube. everything you need to know about paint correction, washing, waxing, etc. is covered by him. he is also a member on this forum. check out the detailing section.

Pollen just laying on the paint won't do any damage but the pollen is abrasive and can scratch the finish if rubbed on the paint.

As per csnow, watch Junkman's excellent paint/wax care videos. You can find them here or on Youtube.

The salesman is a total idiot for not only saying this but even thinking this to be true.

My son and I went to the Nissan dealership this past Saturday to look at a GTR as well as the new 370z's.

The salesman knew nothing about either one of those cars. The guy has a little book with some cheat notes in it but my 16 year old son rattled off every number and detail about both cars way before the salesman could find what he was looking for in his crib notes.

The sales guy way impressed with my son and I was embarrassed for the salesman.

the special finish is called a 'stone chip magnet' on the front. it's a true story.

btw junkman's is good.

tl;dr for the videos : TECHNIQUE > PRODUCT. assuming it's a quality product.

The special finish could be a spray on application the dealer puts on. It is used down here in Fl. a lot due to all of the love bugs & is suppose to protect the finish from the bugs eating into the paint. If you do have a problem the treatment will be reapplied to fix it. FREE
I have a product called the Protector on my Z & only got it because of the love bugs. It works good, the bugs come right off with very little effort.

One more point about not waxing. My wife's Rogue also has the protector finish on it. The sales person told us the same thing about not having to wax the suv & I just laughed at him!

this reminds of this younger fellow who was lined up to do tint before me (i got tint and clearbra done on my dd) at the tint shop saying his dealer applied opticoat was plenty to protect his hood (golf-r) from getting knicked from rocks.

i was like lol, kid.. u keep thinking dat.

Thanks for all the replies! I just love the smell of Zymol products. It says I have to use the HD Cleanse before apply the Japon past wax so it properly bonds to the paint. The car is brand new so I think I'll just wash it for a while. Thanks!
