Accidentally shifted from 3rd to 2nd
I accidentally shifted from 3rd to second in high rpm when I wanted to shift into 4th, my tires chirped a little bit and I instantly put it into 4th right after. Whats the probability I completely damaged my second gear? It felt fine after that as I continued to drive. Just a little worried I damaged my transmission.:wtf2:

totaled... start the part out

I'd be more worried that you pulled the "money shift" and over-revved your engine. You'd know that right away though, I would think. Just remember the rev limiter won't save you if you downshift at too high a rev.
|
Yep. If you did any damage you would have known. The engine would have made a really expensive noise.
|
You are fine.
No oil pressure light and no weird noises = you are good to go. The VQ's are strong engines. |
That is why it's worth to have the synchro rev. Does your Z equipped with one?

For future reference, what would it mean if the oil pressure light did come on, and I did hear a weird noise? |

Weird noise = bearing(s) gone bad. Possibly due to lack of oil. Could be other things. |
You probably blew the welds on the intake. Now me and the mad scientist got to rip apart the block and replace the pistons rings you fried.

You are fine. Just take it easy and take the Z for a long drive. Then inspect everything for leaks or weird sounds. These engines are made to take some abuse. Unless you keept it at 8K for several minutes, you are fine. |

Also, before that happened the Challenger couldn't catch me, but then I ****** up and really slowed down, but he got out on me on the second street and I was super worried I damaged something so I just backed off. XD Thanks for all of the advice guys. I really appreciate it. |
This happened to me twice, but nothing else occurred.

No electronics can save you from a mechanical over-rev. |

Rev limiters only work when you are going up. Not coming down. |

Yes the SRM would rev match when you shift to a lower gear to save you from doing a heel and toe shifting. The SRM is there in a way to protect the tranny which allow you to engage smoothly into a lower gear without experieing the sudden jolt like your car is suddenly want to decelerate which sometimes you use to aid as emergency brake In a manual without SRM. Thus the SRM in a way lessen the strain on your clutch engagement. But yes I agree the SRM would not save your tranny on an over rev situation such as on a red line zone. I do not believe op was not in red line zone when he downshifted. Plus the rev limiter is an indicator to let you know that you need to up shift to a higher gear and not to lower gear. Unless you are at 6th gear already. Being said I do not think OP has jeopardized his tranny or engine. The SRM would have alerted him with a sudden up rev of the engine and not the other way around with it being turned off which is more damaging without doing a heel and toes shifting. |
