Well... I think my steering lock wont disengage.

Well this is lame. I tried to start my car after work on Wednesday and it didn't work. My car has 77,000 km and its an 09 model. I have all the symptoms of a locked steering lock. So I'm pretty sure that's what it is. I was left stranded at work and had to leave the car there overnight.

I tried to tap it with a rubber mallet to see if I could get it started but that didn't work. So I ended up towing it to the dealer now because I ran out of ideas.

When it gets fixed, should I still pull out that fuse for the steering lock, or is it okay to leave it in.

:shakes head::shakes head::shakes head::shakes head::shakes head:

Why didn't you just pull out the fuse before?

arvind_korha 11-05-2015 10:04 PM

I didn't know about it before. I just researched all of this yesterday. :(

Pull the fuse. Several good DIYs on this site.

Don't tap it. As someone else on the forum says (after three previous attempts or so), beat it like it owes you money. Hit that bitch hard. What are you going to do, break it?
I'd go to the dealer or wherever you had it towed and try it at least one more time before you pay out of pocket :twocents:

And yes. Absolutely pull the fuse after you take care of the problem.

also try a hammer. the sharper impacts might free it better.

charge your battery first too. needs all the juice.

Something like this ought to do it :rofl2:

Mine went out nearly 2 years ago, dealer tapped it and didn't work. I bashed it with a hammer and it started right up. Don't give up on that yet

Go to town on that bitch! A tap isn't enough force to get released. Ya gotta beat it up!

Once you get the engine started, leave it running and pull the fuse under the hood.

Like everyone said fist or rubber hammer bang the steering column. I would also add banging it on the right side (where your right knee touches) while shaking the steering wheel. Took me 2 hours to unlock it and cut fuse, well worth $1200 dealer quoted me plus tow

Just got off the phone with the dealer. They said it is going to be fixed for free. Luckily my car falls under the batch that got recalled. This is perfect!

I am pulling that fuse out as soon as I get the car back.
