How Far Can You Drive After Change Filter & Oil?

Hey Guys,

Quick question. I usually always get my oil and maintenance on time. Car has reached 50k and I got the service on my nav saying the oil and filter needs to be replaced.

I got super busy and I probably drove it an additional 800 km after that!

I was going to bring it into service this weekend but was thinking since it might snow here soon I was gonna store the car - in which when I pull it out in spring I hear you have to do an oil change anyways since the car has been idle for so long.

So my question is (so much for quick question lol) - is it OK I still drive the car short distance and stuff and just park it for the winter or have I really gone over the limit and should get oil change and maintenance ASAP?

I called the dealership and they said the service that is due for the car is gonna be around $600 or something (which includes the oil and filter change)

There are a number of threads outlining the steps that should be taken to properly winterize your car. Changing the oil and filter is usually a given. Use the Search function and check the threads. You'll discover what should be done.

If you are using a good-quality oil*, change it at 20000-30000 mile (30000-50000 km) intervals and you should be OK. It's not like the oil is good one day and bad the next, so putting a few extra miles/km on the oil is not a big deal (assuming the oil is still in decent shape, which it should be with 50km on it).

Personally, I'd change the oil before putting in storage. The oil collects acids and other contaminants that I wouldn't want sitting in the engine over the Winter. YMMV

*Many threads on this. In a nutshell, most modern oils are good enough for DD use.

Not a big deal, go get the oil changed before storage.

Wait you haven't changed your oil in 50,000 miles?!! CHANGE IT NOW!!

Wait, did I interpret this incorrectly? I assumed he drove it 800KM's FURTHER than the suggested distance at oil change...I.E. 3 to 6 thousand miles. But you think he went 50 thousand miles without an oil change (re-reading....you might be correct)? If so....OP better get a new car.

i've done 8000km (which is about 5k miles)before an oil change but i also did keep the oil topped up at all times.

now i'm doing it ever 5000km.

I do every 7500kms, give or take, I've hit 8000kms a few times, always change with Redline and no problems.

I do mine every 2500mi. ; but depends on condition's & how you drive.
i'd like to know what all they gonna do for 600$...wow!

i would say to change it before storage/but if you choose not...then after oil is changed & car is brought up to normal operating temp./replace oil filter & top up oil.
[this will get those trapped contaminents out]
