Am I shifting/using the clutch too often?

Pretend you're on the freeway...doing 65-70. Now you're in 6th (manual of coures) and you want to give her the beans, so you drop down to 4th. Now when I do this, I clutch in, go to neutral, clutch out, rev, clutch in, 4th gear, clutch out. Doesn't take me more than .5 seconds but this is so unnecessary right? :ugh2: (I came from a beater with a manual that shifted more smoothly shifting like this). Carried this "bad habit" when going to a 98 Mustang GT...and still do it in my Z. :shakes head:

Pulled this from wiki 'double clutching'.

"The purpose of the double-clutch technique is to aid in matching the rotational speed of the input shaft being driven by the engine to the rotational speed of the gear the driver wishes to select (directly connected to rotating wheels). When the speeds are matched, the gear will engage smoothly and no clutch is required. If the speeds are not matched, the dog teeth on the collar will "clash" or grate as they attempt to fit into the holes on the desired gear. A modern synchromesh gearbox accomplishes this synchronization more efficiently. However, when the engine speed is significantly different from the transmission speed, the desired gear can often not be engaged even in a fully synchronized gearbox. An example is trying to shift into a gear while travelling outside the gear's speed or directional range, such as accidentally into 1st from near the top of 2nd, or intentionally from reverse to a forward gear whilst still moving at speed.

Double clutching, although time consuming, eases gear selection when an extended delay or variance exists between engine and transmission speeds."

So...in theory...good. In practice, waste of time?

You don't need to double clutch in a car with modern syncros unless you're Vin Diesel. Carry on granny shifting.

Yeah, I was wondering why the hell I'm still doing it in car with syncros... Unless I was a big-rig trucker in a past life...

kenchan 10-15-2015 01:10 PM

i double clutch sometimes when i cant get the car to go into 1st at anything faster than a roll.

but im in pain lately so i try not to clutch too much.. :ugh:

mishuko 10-15-2015 01:45 PM

do you have the base model or sport package?

Nixin 10-15-2015 02:48 PM

I am also guilty of double clutching, sometimes. It just feels correct.

Firebase99 10-15-2015 02:52 PM

You should try it reverse. I made that mistake once. Once!!

Base. My left foot is the S-MODE button.

SouthArk370Z 10-15-2015 03:27 PM

As per the article that was quoted, double-clutching isn't necessary unless there is a big difference in input and gear speeds - such as kenchan's example of downshifting to first at any appreciable speed - or worn synchros.

no, s-mode is throttle control to rev match. has nothing to do with how you suck or dont suck with the clutch (left foot) action.

Zthirty4NISMO 10-15-2015 07:07 PM

Yeah, not necessary with today's synchos. Now stepping down through the gears on an Eaton Fuller Super 10 tranny is a completely different story and will have you wishing for SRM

...because we owe them a 10 second car?? :driving:

JARblue 10-15-2015 10:44 PM

The biggest problem I have is that the OP is downshifting into 4th at 65 mph ;)

The Z can handle 90 mph in 3rd :driving:

Riptide67 10-16-2015 03:40 PM

Completely unnecessary as stated above. I do however double clutch in my Datsun 280Z.

90 ST 10-16-2015 04:51 PM

I don't even use the clutch anymore the whole thing is a waste of time.

nah both of you doing it wrong: you gotta put toilet paper on the seat, then stand on the seat, THEN start sh*tting.

Depends on my mood. Sometimes I push the clutch in. Go to 5th, then 4th. Release clutch. Other times, I push the clutch in, and roundhouse from 6th to 4th. Release clutch. Every once in awhile. I don't use the clutch. I like to see if I down shift without grinding the gears. About half the time. I can do it. :D
