Burning Smell??
Hey guys,
The other day I was stopped at a stop sign and upon starting again, I somehow forgot that the car was still in 3rd gear and I accidentally revved to like 5500 rpm's before realizing this and shifting back to first. Shortly afterwards, I smelled a kind of burnt plastic/rubber smell coming from the engine. Has anyone else experienced this/ know what it could be? I have about 800 miles on my car and it is a 6MT. Thanks |
Your clutch screaming in pain?
|
could be 1 of 2 things....
1) your brake pads breakin in 2)clutch is heating up .... hopefully ur not riding the clutch >.< |
your burning your clutch. If you rev high and pull the clutch up even a tad..it will stink..
|
If you rev super high ..you gotta follow through with it ..burn out or pop it fast..if you let it hang without engaging..it burns and stinks...try lower rpms for a while....happened to me a few times by accident.

Thanks for the insight so far guys. So I guess my question would be, will this have any long-term effects on my clutch/transmission.

But don't worry, you'll get better at adjusting your shifts to the point it won't happen very often. |

better to replace the clutch than your transmission. :D

You burnt the clutch a little. You may get a little shudder in the clutch for a while but it will go away. I burnt mine a little by revving it and then as the revs were falling back down let the clutch out slowly and crept forwards (in 1st). The heavy flywheel doesn't help.
|
Funny, I get the same smell when I clutch kick on drift days:rofl2:
you just got your clutch a little hot, no worries. |

z-whiz- if it helps, i usually shift into 1st while still rolling forward, then wait in N with clutch-out at the light.
this way it's easier to shift back into 1st when you're ready to go. sometimes the tranny plays tricks on you where it wont go into 1st unless you roll the car slightly forward/aft. so you think you're in 1st but it's in 3rd. :D |

I garage my car and when I got it thought the same thing it is a weird odor i have about 12000 miles smell is long gone |
Is it just me, or are ATs in Zeds less trouble-prone than MTs?? From searches on the Net, and other posters on various sites (such as "my350Z.com"), it "seems" (I might be wrong!) that ATs are very reliable; at least, my '04.5 Touring Coupe's is. Anyone has stats of any sort? Just curious!

but hey, atleast the op was willing to try MT and not just hop in some AT. just sayin! |
No prob', dude! It's just that I keep running into thread after thread of posters confronting probs' with their MTs. I am a firm believer in a "have it your way" approach in those issues, BTW. Like I said, just curious!
|
I have to agree with j.arnaldo, just browse around the forums and you'll notice there's barely any thread regarding complaints of the 7AT whereas threads regarding complaints of the 6MT is quite common. Maybe it's due to the high ratio of 6MT owners compared to 7AT owners?

Sounds like you just smoked your clutch a little, everyone does it eventually. Just don't go making a habit of it.

when i went to my dealer the salesguy's first words were 'we dont have any more AT's in-stock, only MT's.'
my reply "that's perfect." :D |

I'm hearing the rumors already about the soon-to-be extinction of the manual transmission. |
yah, soon to be extinct gasoline-only powered RWD sports cars/coupes too... one of the reasons why i got the 370Z.... thought it might be the last one that's truely gasoline powered and MT.
the world is becoming more and more of a boring place for normal folks that drive these cars on street. |
