I usually get 3%-5% cash back too just depends on what card I decide to use.
As for Arco, I never go there just because I used to go to Arco with my Altima I had a couple years back and had to get the gas tank changed twice due to fact of the deposits clogging up in the tank. After that only used Shell, Chevron and 76 for gas. Used Arco very rarely only when I have to use it usually on road trips where there isn't another gas station or something like that. Never have had good luck with arco

But lets get some of that additives going around and maybe I will start using it again haha
If I could fill up with more than 91 octane I would :driving:
I don't use Arco because I hate cash, lol

And I literally think work can get 99% Toluene (114 octane) for $5/gallon now.

And I rotate what I use. Sometimes toluene in small amounts, sometimes a few gallons, sometimes I use IPA (rubbing alcohol) to clear water out of the tank (just preventative especially because I run the tank down.) Then your off the shelf ones such as Seafoam and Barryman's C-41.

So. This is how the breakdown happens. (Will not be accurate math)


The refinery needs to produce 10,000,000 gallons of gas in varying octane. The total octane of the gas is let's say 890,000,000...

They can either make it all 89 octane, or some 87, some 89, some 91, and some 93, but for every gallon of 93, they need to make 2 gallons of 87.

This works ok outside CA because every other car is a pickup that will run just fine on 85 octane, but in CA there are so many damn BMWs, Lexuses, and Mercs that we choose to produce so much high octane gas that we cannot make higher than 91 because there just isn't enough octane to go around at the end of the day.

huh, all this time i thought refineries made bascially the 87 or 89 and just mixed watever to make the 93 and such at the gas stations. interesting indeed, thanks! :tup:

kinda thought like fountain drinks. add syrup, add carbonated water.. walla! you got coke, sprite, mt.dew, etc. all from the same carbonated water.

Maybe I explained it a bit too simple, and you're kinda correct.

The refinery makes the highest and the lowest, the pump mixes usually.


The thing is that (in my example) the demand for 87 has to be twice as high as it is for 93.

I can tell you that in CA, 91 and 87 sell almost 1 to 1. I'll take a pic next time I fill up (next week)

I tell you that once I didn't use cash for 6+ months and the first time I went to use it I asked "hey, do you guys take ca-" then I realized what I was asking... Lol


Next time you go to the pump, look for the ticker on the pump. It tells you how much has been dispensed (not in gallons if my memory is correct) since you're in CA, you'll see close to 1:1 from 87 to 91.
In Texas it was like 3:1

Also, they can raise the total octane of the batch, BUT it's not cost efficient. So for all intensive purposes that's how the gas breakdown works.

not exactly, our gal is more then yours...I think yours is 3.78 liters, vs ours at 4 liters. it's messed up I know. lol
But I have put in $90 more then once, our gas is about 80 cents lower then it's highest rt now.
Thankfully since I use my car for work mostly they pay for all my gas. :)

:eek: Wow at some of the gas prices in this thread...didn't realize it was still so high in parts of the country.

All I can say is God Bless SC! Premium running $2.43/gal here over the weekend! :D
