I wouldn't recommend a Z as your first car either. It has just way too much horsepower and torque to be messed around with like most first cars are driven. I had an 02 Altima as my first car. Guess what, drove it into the ground. Blew a head gasket and ended up selling the thing for a down payment on a barebones ford ranger (job wasn't what it is today). As time went on and I had that truck for about a year and a half, I had a new job at this point making twice as much as I did at my previous job, which put me in a better situation to make a move towards a new car. Of course this is also excess over all the necessary bills; rent, utilities, insurance, gas, food, misc. items.

I know only being 20, I am in that category of being a teenager and having this car, but the fact of the matter is, I'm self-supporting and pay for the car myself. When you actually pay for a car yourself and invest big amounts of money into it, it makes you drive it completely different than if it were a gift from your parents; and its because if you end up doing something to screw it up, you not only have to pay to fix it but also have to still keep paying your monthly payment.

I do think this car should be one you earn just because at that point you've done your research and gone through the driving experience to realize the amount of respect you have to have driving a machine like this on the road.
I'd suggest going with the 2016 Honda Civic Si that will be coming out soon if not already out. Its got about 210 hp and is plenty fast and plenty luxurious for a first car.

The Z is definitely a force to be reckon.

OP, are you related to Tim Richmond?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Richmond

Excerpt from link:

When Richmond reached age 16, his parents purchased him a Pontiac Trans Am, a speedboat and a Piper Cherokee airplane for his birthday. Yet his mother Evelyn often worried about spoiling her only son. She once said, "Tim was lazy...", and "... I did everything for him. I ruined him, I admit it. He was my whole life."[10]

I'm 21 and everyone assumes my parents bought it for me. It's really annoying. I worked hard to get this car. Also, why does everyone assume if someone has a fast car for their first car, they're going to crash it? My first car was a T5 volvo modified to 320WHP and I never got into a crash or got a ticket. Just a lot of fun at the drag strip.

Props to you if you are able to afford this car at 21. You just gotta realize most 21yo don't have the income to afford a car like this. So logic dictates it was purchased for them.

Most people that age don't realize the consequences of certain actions until it's too late. Obviously there are exceptions as you seem to be but you can't fault people for thinking young kids make stupid decisions some times.

Because statistics. There's a reason it costs a fortune to insure a teenager, much less one with a fast car.

I grew up around people racing cars so I've been taught the consequences that come with that. And yeah that's true about people my age not being able to afford these kind of cars. Anyone else I know my age are driving older cars

I rent (financially bad decision I know), 0 credit card balance, higher credit score than most people.

Sorry if my typing isn't the best. Just got my wisdom teeth pulled and the pain killers are making me wonky.

i disagree. owning a house comes with overhead (more on older houses). then again there are a bunch of factors which can determine if it's worthwhile to rent or own.

not to mention you're very young so your credit score isn't going to be as strong as someone like mr.ken so the banks probably won't give you a mortgage.

again you're proving that you're an exception to the general consensus that young kids be trying to be kewlz.

Especially with property taxes being so damn high in NJ. There has been a few articles I've seen lately stating it's more financially sound to rent than buy in this state. Go figure.

Thumps up man. I am 23, rent my own place, pay my own bills, insurance, been on my own since 19. Wanted to buy a house first but Los Angeles home prices are ridiculous. Low credit debt. Kudos and I've done plenty of research on owning a property also.

I like how you ASSume he lives at home to be able to buy a Z. I bought my first house and a new car at 20, sure the house would fit in the garage of my current house, but still. Young doesn't always mean freeloader.

the difference between you and the OP is that you aren't creating threads that scream "I NEED ATTENTION!" and purposely asking, IMO, to be flamed on.

Well, I've been on my own since i was 17, rented a room in a rooming house for $80 a week out of the $85 a week I made at the Foodtown Supermarket I worked at back in the 80's. Walked to work and school and spent the $5 leftover on discounted food that I got from my job, Potpies were only .25 cents back then and I could get a case for $2.40. While doing things on your own has it rewards as I'm very successful now, a lot of my youth was spent becoming an adult when I should've been enjoying life as a kid. I say to this to say............If you have parents blessed enough to do things like this for you then go pick your new Z out, be safe and have a FFucking Blast.
