Crazy idea to get back into Z's?

Out of anger, frustration, and listening to too many people (none are sports car people), I traded my 2009 370 back in December (4th clutch pedal to the floor problem). Dealer would not address the csc problem and neither did the corporate folks in Franklin TN (and I tried, boy did I try). Anyway, after having had 6 Rx7s and 1 Z, I thought maybe it was time to move on from sports cars and bought a very low mileage black Dodge Challenger R/T. It has all the bells and whistles, Hemi, red stripes, you name it. Everything. Discovered I was not ready to leave 2 seaters behind after all. The problem is, mow I'm upside down in the Challenger. Oh brother. But, all is not lost. I am interested in a 2010-2012 370Z, base with 6-spd and rear spoiler. I also have an extensive firearms collection. I plan off to sell the big ticket items that are safe queens, plus throw in some cash I will have at the end of the summer, trade the RT and get a Z again. Unless I can get out from being upside down, wife will go nuts. Wish me luck. I am hoping for early part of September. I don't know what I was thinking, I have a 68 Barracuda and others similar cars. But I loved the Z. I'll be back with you folks shortly.

If you can hold out, I'd wait another year. New Z (Z35) should be available for 2017 MY (so, figure November 2016), and you can either go for that or for a late model Z34 (current version) for less as dealers scurry to clear out their lots or private owners want to move to the new one.

In the meantime, yank out the backseat on the R/T :icon17:

thought the real reason was your wife yelled at you for getting the Z.

id you still have the same wife, i'd consult her first. :ugh: GL... :ugh2:

I would wait, You have plenty of time due to the new Z's release sometime in the near future. Pay down on your current car more. I had to wait 4 years until it was right for me. I bought a 2year old with 19K miles. Saved a bunch of money. If you can hold out for a one year old new model, I may not have the CSC issue. I guy can dream, right.

TechnicZ 03-22-2015 11:51 AM

Definitely wait. Sounds like the initial decision was an impulsive move. Enjoy the challenger as much as possible to decrease the amount lost in a trade/sell then go for the new redesigned Z. Good things come to those who are patient.

Spooler 03-22-2015 01:08 PM

Yeap, you need to get away from being upside down money wise in a vehicle.

MightyBobo 03-22-2015 11:26 PM

You're compounding your impulse move with another equally impulsive move.

Be smart: wait.

Thanks

I thought about buying the Z for a very long time, 2005 to 2009. Buying it was not an impulse. Getting rid of it was. It was a knee jerk reaction to the constant csc problem and listening to too many people...non of whom were ever into sports cars. I plan to save money through the method I listed plus several others. Because of my age and how close retirement may be, I have a 1 to 2 year window. I appreciate the fact that you all took the time to provide some very thoughtful and useful advice. I should never have sold the 2009.

That's what we're saying....or at least, that is what I'm saying.

Selling the Z in the first place was an inpulse. Selling the Challenger to buy a Z, and off-loading weapons because you're in over your head is just as impulsive. Should just wait it out a bit for the next generation of Z, or you'll regret that as well...you'll be in a far better position to buy.

But it's worth noting, that sports cars in GENERAL would be considered an unwise purchase. Not that it'll stop us...

I agree to a degree with everyone here.

You should carefully weigh your options and decide what you want to do (depending on the size of purchase I do a time-test) and then execute your decision quickly.

For example, I have a 1-day threshold for sub 100 doller purchases. If I want it today, if the urge is still there to buy a new 'item' then I'll wait a few days and if the 'desire/urge' is still there i'll get it. If I get non-chalant then it can wait.

For a car... heck... any major purchase then I'd do a longer time-wait test. Like... 7 days. Will it kill you to wait an extra few days to weigh your decision? No? Then wait.

A car is not life or death so it's not worth rushing to make a decision. As you're experiencing now, another bad move will definitely compound your issue. Your 30k debt will turn into 50k on a car that's worth... 40k? And then to top it off the depreciating asset is going to go down a lot faster initially than your debt. Try re-sell the car back to the dealer at the price you paid for it.

I wish I would have keep my 1990 300zxtt. Man is sucks, keep your chin up and stay on your path. It will work out.

Thanks everyone

That is why I decided to sell off the "excess" in my collection. I don't plan to buy the Z until I can put a healthy chunk of cash down and, I don't plan to buy new but used. I have a map of what I need to do, how much I need to raise, what I can afford to finance, and so forth. Until I reach those goals, I'm not doing anything. When I finally do the deal, I won't be going further upside down. That is my number one goal. I don't have a specific timetable because I don't know how long this will take. But it will happen. I grew up with nothing and nice sports cars have always been my one true passion. It's not a matter of life and death, its simply a matter of enjoying one's passion.

DOOMMONKEY777 03-24-2015 12:34 PM

Damn dodge sux....i almost bought one 6 spd fully loaded, in the end Z stole my check book. Still haven't looked back, not even at a Porsche.

Ummm.....wait for more Z35 news. Then make a decision.

Inspector71 03-25-2015 11:34 AM

It gets worse

My wife had a minor accident doing $700 worth of damage to the front end of her 2008 Sentra. She makes me drive to the Nissan dealer to pick up some parts and discuss repairs. She says, "park over there." I do. In front of a red 2015 Z that looks like my 2009. Not fun. She see's me talking with a sales person and gets mad and says no more Zs.

My plan is to pay down the Dodge, sell what I need, save what I need, and buy a used Z. Might be a year but DoomMonkey777 is right. This is the best sports car for the price. The Dodge is a wonderful car if you like driving something very large, no rood feel, and no nimble at all. That is not me. I am glad I sill have an 84 Rx7 tucked away to drive. I am parking the Dodge in the garage and driving the Mazda as soon as I register it.

I love cars that are fast, nimble, and small. What was I thinking?
