Definitely not supposed to do that. There's an issue with the shifter switch/wiring.

On a side note, using the shifter is laggy. Paddles shift quicker. I still can't figure out why Nissan did that.

Not sure about the OP uses, but for the AT, sometimes it's nice to use the shifter and not the paddles because if you are coming to a stop sign/light, you can just pop it into auto and let the car downshift all the way. Our equivalent of rolling to a stop in neutral I guess.

For the AT, the car still downshifts for you even if you put it in "manual" mode.
