Questions for Clutch Experts
 

1. Is there a certain mileage for our cars recommended for a new clutch? Of course it depends on use, but are there any general rules of thumb - 80k, 100k, 120k miles - just to prevent damage to the flywheel, getting stranded at the side o the road...(I have 95k miles and my clutch seems perfectly fine)
2. Wait until there are clutch failing symptoms - and if so what are they - noticeable slipping going up hill with WOT?
3. What should I pay (what did you pay) to have a dealer replace a clutch?
4. Any recommended mods with a new clutch - aftermarket, lightened flywheel, etc.

I'm going to ask as well if anyone has experienced a "clicking/ chutter" sound and feeling that it's not smooth when pressing the clutch pedal. I looked and there is a spring mechanism that when pressed it doesn't really bend the entire spring in the direction being pressed. I started noticing this when it got cold. I oiled the area and it's now not as present as before (clutch pedal not exactly clutch related??) I just turned 10k on my mistress:driving:

I just had my clutch replace and my car was at 75000 miles, basically the clutch was burnt. I receive no acceleration anymore, I would press the gas and the revs would spike up but barely any movement from the car.

I went to a third party, but I was not satisfy 100%. I bought the JWT 370Z Clutch / Flywheel Combo 09+ Z34, and an EOM Master Cylinder. The dealer was charging me 3400 dollars, because he stated Nissan has come out with an upgraded clutch and flywheel that also require a change of the master and slave cylinder. The third party charged me 1000 for labor which included Red Line Oil and the Clutch Oil.

I like the JWT clutch , however my car is now getting a new transmission because it was faulty. So.........I haven't had the chance to really test it out.


P.S. I was not satisfy with the third party because there was a screeching noise when I changed gears mostly 2nd gear, but it could've been the transmission which is getting replaced.

the chatter is normal with the clutch.

Don't need to be an expert to answer these.
1. The clutch should last the life of the car, well over 100k, if driven like a normal car. Owners typically don't drive it like an average mid sized sedan so numbers will vary drastically from one person to the next.
2. Clutch test: One way to do it is to run at about 30 mph and then putting the gear into 5th/6th and looking for linear revs as the car accelerates. If the revs go up but the car doesn't accelerate to match the revs, clutch is on the way out and will fail soon.
3. Typically a shop will charge 5-6hrs of labor. Labor rate for mechanics vary a lot from region to shop ~$80/hr. Better places will charge more but should take a little less time.
4. Heavy dutch CSC or CSC elimination. Any reputable clutch/flywheel that fits your style and needs.

1. Agree. There are a few forum members here that got ~120K miles on the stock clutch. Depends on how you operate the clutch.
2. 5th gear is good at 30 mph. Do 6th at 35 or 40 mph. Minimum recommended speed for 6th gear is 33 mph.
3. I've seen anywhere from $500-$1000 for clutch labor on this car. But make sure the shop is competent first. Then make sure they aren't ripping you off. $80-100/hr is pretty standard depending on the shop location.
4. Agree. Don't bother with the OEM CSC. ZSpeed CSC or Z1 CSC Elimination Kit are the top choices. Replace CMC also. Do research on the clutch - all the info you need can already be found on this forum. Some clutches (not all) will work with stock flywheel, which is heavier to keep the noise down. Personally, I would go lightweight flywheel for faster revs, but typically there is more chatter/noise associated with them.

I bought a 2013 leftover in 2014 so it appears that I don't drive it much. I do 250 miles a week under all type of weather conditions, when it got cold I noticed the chatter now that is above 30 degress it appear to have dissapeared...thank all the Gods :driving:

1. if you know how to properly drive a stick, clutch should last a very long time (i.e. over 100K).
2. there are different variables to this, but the best way to test is to place in a higher gear at a lower speed and then WOT. If the speed doesn't "match" the revs, then that's usually a sign.
3. not sure - never had to do this.
4. unless you plan on doing some serious tracking, it's kinda pointless. would a person take whey protein if they just sit on the couch all day?

i dont understand why your clutch was burnt and replaced @ 75k miles. ride the clutch much?
